Sandeman, 1950

Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Plain label

Color: Dark tawny with some red left.
Nose: Sweet Christmas spices. Rich, round sugar. Turpentine.
Palate: Some tannins, edgy. On the dry side for Port (which is typical to me for Sandeman). Decent fruit.
Finish: Medium length. Finish seems younger than the Port's age.

Valtellina, 1950

Frateli Pollati

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

Cantine Antonio Ferrari, 1949

Il 49 di Antonio Ferrari

The Il Barone ‘49 shows a deep garnet colour. For something so old it is still fresh with a touch of oxidation on notes of black cherries, chocolate and espresso infused with sweet spices. The wine has a long finish. This is a wine from the 1949 wine harvest. Fermentation was arrested before complete leaving a high residual sugar content which has preserved the wine. The wine then went into large old Slovenian casks for ten years and then stored in tanks where it has remained until bottling this year. Antonio Ferrari was a wine merchant and negociant in Piedmont who in the mid-20th century developed an interest in the grapes of Puglia.

Kopke, 1948

Vintage Port

A rare 1948 vintage port from Kopke, the oldest port house. You should expect a garnet coloured port with aromas of dried red fruit, raisins and figs with prunes, coffee and cinnamon and clove notes. On the palate it should be sweet and smooth with the acidity balancing the sweetness and with a long aftertaste.

Fonseca Port, 1948

Vintage Port
Clearance Offer | Mid Shoulder | Was £1650 | Now £550

1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered colour with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light colour overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Madeira, 1948

MBV - Barbeito bottled - Malvasia

This is a rare and limited release of the 1948 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1948 Malvasia is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port
100 points - Neil Martin Vinous

100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.

The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

BY NEAL MARTIN | MAY 7, 2018

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port
Level in Neck
100 points - Neil Martin Vinous

From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year. Michael Broadbent described that as an “error of judgment” given the quality of the vintage in retrospect. I have been fortunate to taste the 1948 Taylors on several occasions, encountering one or two perfect bottles along the way.

Armagnac Marquis de Montdidier, 1947

Armagnac - Magnum 1.5lt Bottle

This 1947 Armagnac displays a rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

Marquis de Montdidier are a French brandy brand that specifically uses grapes from the Burgundy wine-region. The name itself originates from the house of Montdidier, an aristocratic French family with roots all the way back to 956.

Chateau Caillou, 1947

Sauternes 2eme Cru Classe

Tasting Notes from Cellar Tracker (2017) Good fill level, not decanted. Clear, salmon-amber color. Needs lots of air to open up and offers the wonderful perfume that only a truly great Sauternes can produce: Notes of honey, herbs, spices, all woven into one complex blend. The sweetness has perfectly blended in over the last half century and is balanced perfectly by the high acidity. Very mulit-layered and extremely complex. Toffee, coffee, honey, spices, figs and much more. Astonishingly everything is at its right place, all components of acidity, flavors and alcohol are perfectly integrated.

Chateau Coutet, 1947

Barsac, Premier Cru Classe

1947 Chateau Coutet tasting note from Cellar Tracker. "If the nose on the 1947 Coutet is promising, then the palate over-delivers with the most fresh rough cut Seville orange marmalade, macadamia, toffee, cooked shiitake, Marsala, and unsmoked cigar. This isn’t the biggest, but I love its combination of fresh and savory, of young and old, of lush and svelte." Tasted 2022 - 96 Points

Château Coutet is a Bordeaux wine estate located in the Barsac appellation within the Sauternes region of Bordeaux, France. It is particularly known for its sweet white wines, which are often made from a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot.

Chateau Margaux, 1947

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe
Vandermeulen bottled.
High Shoulder

Château Margaux 1947 is an outstandingly great wine, particularly powerful and still very fresh. The bouquet is intense and mellow, with very ripe fruit coming through. On the palate, the power of the tannins comes to the fore, leaving a slightly dry impression, which is quite typical of the wines of this generation. This type of wine was made for long ageing. It can be enjoyed now, of course, but it can be laid down without any problem for many more years.

Chateau Palmer, 1947

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

95 Points cellar tracker review.
" It takes 15-20 minutes to open up this 69-year old beauty. Opulent and warm nose with light flower and prefume. The palate rested with clean and clear cherry, mints and sweet. Medium finishing given the age. It showed its best around 55-75 minutes after the bottle opened, and faded quickly after with alcoholic taste." Review on cellar tracker posted 2016.

An icon of the Margaux appellation, immediately recognisable by its midnight blue label and its inimitable velvet taste, Château Palmer has illustrated itself, over the course of its history, by a sound obsession: to carry its wines further on in their expression of the nuances of a great terroir.
