Barolo, 1981

Tenuta Carretta - Cannubi

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1981

St Julien, Grand Cru Classe, 2nd Growth Classification

"A top success for the vintage, the 1981 Gruaud-Larose is dark ruby, with a full-intensity bouquet of ripe black currants, spicy oak, plums, leather, smoked meat, and violets. This wine is concentrated on the palate, with rich, tannic, lingering flavors." Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Edition

Chateau Latour, 1981

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

"The 1981 tastes remarkably velvety and supple for such a young Latour--not that this is a malevolent occurrence--because the excellence, complexity, and richness of the wine are still present. The color is dark ruby, the bouquet offers plenty of ripe cassis and spicy oak, and the flavor is generous, silky, moderately tannic, and long in the finish. This Latour may turn out to be similar to the 1971." Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Ed.

Chateau Margaux, 1981

New

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1981 Chateau Margaux is probably the best wine from a difficult vintage.

95 points Wine Spectator
The other wine of the vintage. Seriously powerful with fabulous color and mint, cassis and berry aromas and flavors. Has a full body and is tannic; still needs time to come around. (10/1994)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
In weight and texture, the 1981 Margaux is closest in style to the 1979. It is an outstanding wine, even in the company of the monumental wines of 1982, 1983, and 1986, although it does not have the power and weight of these vintages. It is still very dark ruby/purple-colored.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1981

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood. This particular vintage is from 1981, which was bottled in 1986.

1980 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1980

Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe (Level Base of Neck)

** 92 Points Neil Martin ***

Reviews
"A complete shock to everyone who tasted this blind at La Trouvaille. Tasted alongside Lynch Bages 66, a little fatter on the nose with notes of cedar and cooked meats. Good poise and freshness. The palate has good depth, smooth tannins and quite vivacious. Full of life and vigour. Where does the concentration come from? Who cares - a wine that stuck two fingers up at all its critics who have ever dismissed this wine. Lovely. Tasted February 2004." Neil Martin Wine Journal

Blandys Madeira, 1980

Terrantez Madeira 37.5cl HALF BOTTLE
Includes Own Box

Blandy’s Terrantez 1980

Review bySarah Ahmed "The Wine Detective". "I’m a huge Terrantez fan and this one ticks all the right boxes. Smooth on the nose with a smooze of light caramel and sweet café crème. A lick of tobacco herbality – greener – lends appetising lift. The saliva glands are at work already! And so it is in the mouth – almost creamy on entry, yet penetrating too thanks to its lively, very persistent backbone of acidity. Delicate staccato spices and a lick of toffee apple seduce. That bottled electricity, v.a. accelerant fires up a super long, reverberating finish, its delicious woody, mellow timbre deftly leavened by that light, herbal riff.

Chateau Latour, 1980

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The wine of Latour is an example of regularity, no matter the quality of the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth, it requires a long aging to reveal all its potential, its power and extraordinary wealth. Perfectly ripe grapes produce a very impressive wine with an incredible bouquet of cassis, hazelnut and leather. A monumental wine.

The 1980 Dows Vintage Port has a very dark red/black centre, dark red to brown rim. On the nose there are creamy, blackberries and black cherries, slightly herbal notes (good), smoke and wet stone, sweet. Graham's Port, 1980

Vintage Port

Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. The tannins were powerful on Christmas day but mellowed some by the next evening. The blackberries carried through as a prominent flavor, but added a sourish note almost like a sour cherry. The finish starts out with a rich butter cookie note, but then quickly switches to grape stem.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1980

Vintage Port
bin-soiled and damaged labels | vintage legible

“Due to the richness in colour intense fruit flavour and its impressive finish, Sandeman 1980 promises to be a wine of considerable character when mature. The 1980 should as was the 1960, be at maturity sooner rather than later” (David Sandeman).

A slight menthol note here. The nose is very rich, perhaps a touch chemical. Nice weight on the palate – chewy, with good dimension. Good balance and finish.

Tignanello, 1980

Antinori
Magnum Bottle (1.5 Lt)

The 1980 Tignanello is at full maturity, served from an impeccably stored Magnum it will maintain more youth than a regular 75cl bottle. This wine has a real rustic coppery plum core with lots of bricking around the edge. The nose is rich with plump fruits and pencil lead showing obtusely while notes of tobacco, stone and worn cedar lay underneath.
Dry medium plus acidity but very light tannin structure at this stage. Bold dark fruits are ripe and surprisingly juicy. Lots of game notes, black tea and humidor flavors round out the moderate body. Good finish. (Cellar tracker review)

The Tignanello website proclaims.

Review:
Intense amber coloured. Presents a complex and rich bouquet of aromas where stands out the dried fruits. On the taste it is distinct, balanced and harmonious. Tannins elegantly combined which persists in the delicious finish.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, in neck, good label

From the famously tannic 1979 vintage, this Lafite is proving the more dismissive critics from earlier days wrong as it settles harmoniously into maturity with plenty of life and complexity remaining. At K&L, we are champions of great wines from lesser vintages, and here is a perfectly mature First Growth from a lesser vintage that may not be out of reach in price. Fans of classic wines from the Left Bank with preferences that favor the leathery and refined end of the spectrum will find much to appreciate here.
