Dating to 1870, Justino’s has been and continues to be an esteemed producer of Madeira. The winery has been located in Cancela, Santa Cruz, since 1995. They are famous for producing the Broadbent Selections. Older 20th century vintages are wonderful expressions of the noble grapes of the island.

The 1964 Calon Segur has a mature mahogany hue with tawny rim, the nose is fully mature with aromas of Chinese 5-spice, molasses, mint and cedar, lacking the clarity of a great ’61. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, sturdy tannins, still earthy but dominated by decayed, mushroom fruit and sous-bois on the finish. Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

Medium garnet in colour with yellowing and bricking towards the rim. This is very much alive. Wet leaves, forest floor, sweet tobacco, raspberry, red cherry, vanilla, and white flowers on the nose. There is a lot of sweetly perfumed classic Margaux aromatics. Secondary and tertiary notes dominate but there is still a lot of fruit left here leading to a nice long finish.

The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it's worth revisiting in the USA, since it's a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per litre of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavours that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavour and seems to linger indefinitely. …

Blandy’s Vintage Bual 1957 as a crystalline bright colour with golden highlights, Mahogany colour with a greenish hue. Exuberant and intense aroma. Balsamic notes, spices and nuts. The Il Barone ‘49 shows a deep garnet colour. For something so old it is still fresh with a touch of oxidation on notes of black cherries, chocolate and espresso infused with sweet spices. The wine has a long finish. This is a wine from the 1949 wine harvest. Fermentation was arrested before complete leaving a high residual sugar content which has preserved the wine. The wine then went into large old Slovenian casks for ten years and then stored in tanks where it has remained until bottling this year.
