Krohn Port, 1940

Colheita single harvest colheita port

The 1940 Colhieta Port from Krohn has a deep and intense tawny colour for its age with an amber-brown rim. Powerful, racy nose with very complex aromas of brown spices, violet perfume, and balsamic. Lively, full and unctuous with long pecan nut and toffee finish, but well balanced in acidity,sweetness, and alcohol.


Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians, Theodor Wiese & Dankert Krohn. At the beginning, it was a very small firm, based on the export of Port wine. In 1880 Theodor Wiese decided to sell his share to Dankert Krohn - the Company was simply too small to be shared by two owners - but he went on working for W&K as a commercial agent in Norway.

Barros Port, 1937

Colheita Port

This is a Colheita Port of exceptional quality and elegance. Barros make their colheita ports from a single harvest. These "Vintage Tawny" ports are aged in small 550-litre oak barrels in the Vila Nova de Gaia Cellars. It is bottled at least seven years after ageing.

Dark maple colour with an amber tinge. Notes of leather, cedar and crème brûlée revealed a sublime nose as this continued to evolve in glass. Rich and soft with a sexy elegance, the Burmester showed a sweet and full-bodied style which was better on the palate. By the time I reached the end of my glass, this ‘37 had fully assuaged any concerns I had initially.

This port has a bright amber colour with a brown-tawny halo. Elegant nose of dried fruits, well integrated with wood notes. Light and fragrant, with wonderful volume and structure. A wine with great freshness and multi-dimensional flavours. Delicate and persistent finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. This is a contrast to vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. Colheita ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of aging, giving them a open-life of a month or longer.

Sercial Madeira

A bottling of Madeira from the 1934 from Cossart, the oldest company in the Madeira wine business.
Sercial is the name of a white grape grown in Portugal, especially on the island of Madeira. It has given name to the dryest of the four classic varieties of Madeira fortified wine.

The anglicised name Sercial came to be associated with the Madeira style rather than the grape variety, being the lightest, most acidic and delicate expression of Madeira that takes the longest to mature.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1927

Bastardo

D’Oliveiras is one of the more classic Madeira shippers, and one of the few to survive from the pre-Phylloxera era. The Bastardo grape barely survived Phylloxera and basically disappeared from Maderia. Its excellent acidity supports this wine. Perfumed black walnut and green figs present on a seductive, drying palate. Bottled in 2006. "Matured in Adegas do Torreao and bottled in 2006, the Bastardo '27 has a refined, quite reticent bouquet with notes of dried honey, creme brulee and scorched earth... The palate is very elegant and harmonious, the breeding of this almost extinct grape variety really showing through.

Decanter Wine Legend -May 2015.

Ygay wines are renown for their elegance and longevity. The agran reserva Especial is only produced in outstanding vintages.

After harvest this wine was fermented for 13 days in American oak vats where the wine remained for a further 8 months. It was then transferred to new oak vats where it stayed for five years. The wine was then transferred to older barrels where it matured for an incredible 32 years more before being bottled in 1964. It was given more bottle ageing before. Coming onto the market in 1973. It's longevity is partly explained by its high acidity (ph 2.96).

El Vino's Aniversario, Unique Old Oloroso Sherry - from El Vino's 1879 Solera

A rare bottle containing wine of which a small portion of the blend comes from the year 1879.

This Oloroso sherry wine is an intense sherry that is matured in an oxygen present environment. The resulting wines are fragrant and the best examples will display dried fruits, leather, polished wood and exotic spices. Oloroso shows nutty aromas (especially walnuts), combined with polished / balsamic notes, subtle dried fruits, toasted hints, tobacco and autumn aromas. There are noticeable spicy notes in older examples. Often there are also meaty hints, truffle and leather.

Pairing:
The classic pairing for an Oloroso would be red meat and game, but it will also be lovely with well-aged cheese.

Malmsey Solera 1863.

Malmsey (also known as Malvasia or Malvazia) has its fermentation halted when its sugars are between 3.5 and 6.5° Baumé. This style of wine is characterised by its dark colour, rich texture, and coffee-caramel flavours. Like other Madeiras made from the noble grape varieties, the Malvasia grape used in Malmsey production has naturally high levels of acidity in the wine, which balances with the high sugar levels so the wines do not taste cloyingly sweet.
