Chateau d'Yquem, 1999

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Half Bottle (37.5cl)

Yquem is without doubt, one of the world's finest sweet wine producers, of whom Robert Parker comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend."

Reviews: A golden, straw hue. The nose is predictable and linear compared to the other Yquem's that I have tasted. White flowers, acacia, rather like a sweet Auslese! The palate is lively, rich, moderate acidity.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1998

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Half bottle 37.5cl

‘A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel.

Chateau Guiraud, 1998

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe (Half Bottle)
*** 90 Points - Outstanding - Robert Parker ***

*** 90 Points - Outstanding - Robert Parker ***

The 1998 Chateau Guiraud has an attractive nose of melted candle wax, brown sugar and marmalade that blossoms in the glass. The palate is clean and pure on the entry with crisp acidity. It is a more feminine, lithe Sauternes compared to the 1997 with a pretty peach and dried apricot finish interlaced with spice. Fine. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2013. eRobert Parker.

Louis Sipp, 1994

Tokay Pinot Gris, Sélection de Grains Nobles
Half Bottle Format

A rare 1994 wine made using the Pinot Gris variety in Alsace, France.

Truly sweet and highly-prized, Sélection de Grains Nobles can be made only if the grapes are affected by the benevolent fungus botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. The brown, shrivelled grapes with their high concentration of sugar are individually harvested by hand and the resulting nectar is regarded as one of the finest wines in France. Tokaji, 1993

Tokaji Royal Aszu Essencia
(Half litre, 50cl), Hungary

Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat grape varieties that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars.

Tokaji, 1993

Tokaji Aszu 4 Puttynos 1993
bin soiled and damaged Berry brothers labels

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labeling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1990

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Half Bottle 375ml
** 98 Points - Wine Advocate **

A warm to hot vintage ideal for producing outstanding reds does not necessarily make for a great Sauternes vintage, but in the case of 1990 it did. Dry, warm winds in the autumn contributed to the level of concentration that this wine exhibits. Fortunately, a little rain in late September and early October ensured that botrytis flourished well in the end, the final factor necessary to achieve this extraordinary expression.

The 1990 d'Yquem is medium to deep golden colored, the 1990 d'Yquem opens with unabashed opulence, giving expressive notes of dried apricots, toffee, candied walnut, tree bark and sandalwood with nuances of preserved mandarin peel, lemongrass and fallen leaves.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1989

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
***98 points - Robert Parker***

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

Meticulously made with incredible power, texture, complexity and ageing potential The 1989 is a powerful, intense, rich wine; astonishingly complex; perfectly balanced and a fine, persistent finish.

98 points
Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), January 2003
What a remarkable trilogy of vintages for Chateau d'Yquem (I am speaking of the 1990, 1989 and 1988). This vintage leans more toward the 1990 than 1988 in style. It is a very unctuously textured, medium gold-colored Yquem that is oozing with honey-soaked oranges, pineapples, apricots, and peaches.

Sweet and superbly harmonious on the highly elegant, silky textured and well concentrated palate, this full-bodied, gorgeously fruit-concentrated and animated Chenin from the first picking of dried berries has a perfect, sensual flow and reveals an incredible generosity, finesse and delicacy. Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey, 1988

Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Sauternes
Sweet White Wine

Lafaurie-Peyraguey has produced some of Sauternes' most powerful wines for many decades now. The massively rich, yet fresh, lively 1988 offers a compelling, flowery, honeyed bouquet of vanilla custard, buttery orange/apricot scents, and smoky ceme brulee. The wine's zesty acidity brings everything into extraordinary clarity. Vouvray, 1988

Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux

Domain Huet is one of the top producers of this fabulous sweet wine. The 1988 displays a brilliantly intense and very aromatic, quite floral, Gewurztraminer-like bouquet of ripe fruits (white fleshed stone fruits, apricots, quince confiture), rose petals, spicy and some stony flavors; it shows up very precise and complex and much younger than you might expect from a 30+ year old Chenin. Rich, intense, fresh, powerful and just slightly sweet on the palate due to the vibrant acidity and the tight and grippy tannins, this very mineral Chenin reveals a great tension and a compact, persistent and slightly drying finish, but a lingering salinity.

Chateau Guiteronde, 1987

Sauternes

Château Guiteronde du Hayot is one of the oldest vineyards of the Sauternes-Barsac region. We know that back in 1800 it was owned by M. Journu, the president of the Guyenne Electoral College. The reputation of the wines produced here is very old. In 1850, Charles Cocks, a scholar at the University of France published a book titled: “Bordeaux, its region and its wines”. The book listed the major Gironde wines and Château Guiteronde du Hayot was cited among the best Bordeaux white wines.

The vineyard lies in the heart of Haut-Barsac over 25 hectares on a superb clay and limestone soil; it is planted with a combination of 90% Sémillon, 9% Sauvignon and 1% Muscadelle.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1986

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
Sweet White Wine

Château d'Yquem is considered by many to be Bordeaux’s single greatest wine and it is the only wine in France to hold the Premier Cru Superieur (Great First Growth) designation. The uncompromising pursuit of quality is what sets this sweet white wine apart – a standard meticulously maintained throughout the estate’s history.

Chateau d`Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world. After centuries of family ownership, Yquem was finally sold in acrimonious circumstances to Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy in 1999. However, its former owner and director Alexandre de Lur-Saluce remains in charge.

Recioto, 1986

Tommasi, Sweet Red Wine

"Recioto," as in "Recioto della Valpolicella," refers to a dessert wine made from grapes that were dried on mats after picking. This process turns the grapes closer to raisins, concentrating the flavors. The wines are lovely and taste how you'd expect raisins-turned-wine to taste, rich and sweet.

Recioto, 1986

Di Soave, Dei Capitelli
Sweet White Wine
Half Bottle Format 37.5cl

Recioto di Soave is a sweet white wine made from dried grapes grown in the Soave viticultural zone of Veneto, northeastern Italy. The DOCG title, which includes the Classico version, was granted in 1998.

Recioto di Soave is made from grapes that have been dried out for several weeks or even months after harvest. Traditionally this process took place on straw mats (it is considered a straw wine) in the warmest part of the house or winery.

This should be intense amber in colour. In terms of taste you should expect sweet spices, roasted barley, nicely ripe white fruit with the sweetness of lime and honeysuckle.
