Crozes-Hermitage, 2000
Pierre Chanau
The 2000 vintage of Crozes-Hermitage, made from Syrah in the northern Rhône, offers a mature and evolving profile that reflects both its terroir and age.
Appearance:
Medium garnet core with a slightly bricking rim, indicative of two decades of bottle age.
Nose:
Aromas of dried blackberries, roasted plum, and black olives give way to more tertiary notes of leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs (particularly thyme and bay), and a touch of smoky bacon fat – classic for mature Syrah from this region.
Palate:
Still balanced with soft, integrated tannins and moderate acidity. Flavours echo the nose with stewed dark fruits, earthy undertones, and savoury spice. …

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 1991
Domaine Font de Michelle
The 1991 vintage in the Southern Rhône was cooler and wetter than the superb 1989 and 1990 seasons. While yields were reduced, careful growers produced lighter, more elegant wines that have aged into gentle, savoury examples of classic Châteauneuf.
This 1991 Font de Michelle shows a mature garnet colour with brick highlights. The bouquet carries notes of dried cherry, leather, earthy garrigue herbs, and a touch of spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied, supple, and mellow, with flavours of stewed plum, tobacco, and soft forest floor complexity. The finish is smooth and savoury, highlighting finesse and maturity over power. …

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1990
Chateau Mont Redon
Château Mont-Redon is one of the historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, its vineyards set on the famed galets roulés plateau that gives the wines their depth and character. First mentioned in Roman times and later part of the Papal lands in the 14th century, the estate was revived in 1923 by Henri Plantin, who reunited its fragmented parcels into a grand domaine. Still family-owned today and guided by the Fabre family, Mont-Redon combines tradition with modern winemaking to craft wines of balance, elegance, and longevity.Appearance: Deep, mature ruby.
Aromas: Rich, tertiary layers—tobacco, dark berries, espresso notes, gamey/spiced roast (venison), forest floor (sous bois), truffle nuances, and earthy minerality. …

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1989
Chateau de Beaucastel Pierre Perrin
*** 97 Points Robert Parker ***
Château de Beaucastel has long been considered one of the great wines of France. It is unanimously renowned for its balance, elegance and ageing potential. Beaucastel has an extraordinary terroir at the Northern end of the appellation with heavy exposure to the Mistral. All 13 varieties of the appellation have been organically grown here since the sixties.
1989 was a good year for Rhone Wines and the Beaucastel has striking colour. The nose is profound and sweet, with black truffle, under-wood, and earthy notes. The mouth is fruity, fleshy and round, with soft tannins. …

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 1986
Les Arnevels
This 1986 Arnevels Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows a brick-garnet colour with evolved edges. The bouquet is complex and mature, with dried cherry, prune, leather, tobacco, and hints of warm garrigue herbs. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with softened tannins and savoury flavours of stewed plum, spice, and earthy forest floor. The finish is smooth, mellow, and reflective of fully mature Southern Rhône.
Smaller houses such as Arnevels are rarely seen today, making this a curiosity from the 1980s Châteauneuf landscape. While not a “grand” name, it offers both drinking pleasure and a slice of history. …

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 1981
Jean Astier
The 1982 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was marked by a warm, ripe growing season—yielding wines that were generous and approachable early on, yet capable of graceful aging. After more than four decades in bottle, this wine offers a deeply gratifying glimpse into the matured, old-school style of Southern Rhône winemaking.
This 1982 Jean Astier Châteauneuf-du-Pape pours with a deep garnet core and gently brick-tinged edges. The nose unfolds with heady aromas of dried cherry, leather, baked herbs, and incense. On the palate, it presents lifted, nuanced fruit—think stewed plum and fig—woven together with tobacco, Provençal garrigue, and a hint of gamey complexity. …

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1976
Domaine du Grand Tunel - E. Jeune
An outstanding wine still with a deep red colour. This has really strong bouquet with lovely packing in it; there is charm in the soft red fruits, but power and depth in behind, via some tobacco and rum: all comes in a silken air. This is rich on the palate, backed by good structure and tannin to keep it in shape. Very good length.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1970
Patriarche Pere & Fils
The red wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape blossom and reach their prime between their third and fifth year, but their potential for aging is over ten years and more according to the vintage and storage conditions. Their color changes from intense garnet-purple in the early years to ruby after some cellaring. These wines are structured, with powerful and complex aromas of ripe fruit, mushrooms, truffles, underbrush, spicy notes, and wild animals.
