Chateau Margaux, 2004

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe MAGNUM Bottle

A Chateau Margaux 2004 vintage bordeaux wine. With as much Merlot in the blend as the 1990 and 1996, the quality of this wine is as good as any vintage that the winemaker Paul Pontallier could remember. This is as fabulous and as exciting as the 2000 vintage had been at a similar stage. The nose was simply beautiful - ripe, fine sweet, elegant and powerful with huge potential. The palate is expansive and multi-faceted. Alongside Latour, this is one of the two wines of the vintage.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 2003

Rocche dei Manzoni - La Matinera

A 2003 vintage Italian wine from Dolcetto d'Alba. A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2003

Colheita Port

A 2003 vintage Colheita Port Wine from Quinta do Noval Port.
An aromatic lift with violet and cherry notes and very finely tuned; suggest a certain silkiness and freshness despite this big vintage. The palate has a welterweight of fruit; a great raft of creamy, dark, espresso and bitter chocolate with sweet, thick, glossy black berries. There is huge length, structure, lovely sweetness and a tannin and acid base that suggest this will be near immortal.

In exceptional years, certain lots of wine with great ageing potential are set aside to spend their lives maturing in casks. At a given stage, we decide to bottle a part of a vintage.

Chateau Margaux, 2002

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

An outstanding 2002 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Margaux.

93 Points - Robert Parker
95 Points - Wine Journal

"Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn’t it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration.

Barbera d'Alba, 2001

Giacomo Vico

Barbera d'Alba is a wine of prestige, rich colors that refer generally to the ruby purple, just what clothes cardinals; the bouquet is ample and composite, with fruity notes of blackberry, cherry, strawberry and red fruit jam and spicy aromas reminiscent of cinnamon, vanilla, green pepper.

Castel del Monte, 2001

Tormaresca - Bocca di Lupo

"A wine which demonstrates that the Aglianico grown in the northwestern part of Puglia, just a short distance from the Basilicata, can compete with the best of Italy's south. Smoky and balsamic on the nose with intense and expansive notes of raspberries and blackberries, cloves, mint, and high-roast coffee, its packed, strappingly muscular, and dense flavors continue in a seamless flow over the palate, softening as the move but still totally mouth-filling and explosively powerful. The only regret is that theese wines are released too early and will probably be drunk too early as well - this is a bottle which I would not touch until 2007, and it will still be going strong in 2020.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 2001

Pauillac, 1st Growth Classification

*** 94 Points - Robert parker ***
*** 96 Points - Neil Martin ***

Reviews:
The 2001 Lafite Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 2007-2020.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2001

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

"Lifted blackberry, autumn leaf, cedar and a touch of fresh tobacco, the mintiness enhanced by continued aeration. The palate is very tight and slightly pinched at the moment, the tannins a little harder and less fine than Lafite, the finish slightly chalky and foursquare in texture. Personally, I prefer the 2002 to the previous year, but it is still a decent, mid-weight Pauillac that would show better with cuisine. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted November 2010." Valpolicella, 2001

Zenato

The Valpolicella zone is bordered to the west by the Bardolino DOC, located along the banks of Lake Garda, which produces similar wines to basic Valpolicella using many of the same grapes. The historical "heart" of Valpolicella winemaking is in the Monti Lessini hills located northwest of the town of Verona. In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.

Chateau Langoa Barton, 2000

St-Julien 3rd Growth Classification

*** 91 Points - Robert Parker ***
*** 94 Points - Neil Martin ***

Reviews "Showing far more impressively from bottle than it ever did from cask, this wine has turned out to be an outstanding Langoa Barton. It reveals a deep, saturated purple color and an expansive, sweet nose of earthy black currants, plum, and melted licorice. Structured, dense, chewy, with full body, good acidity, and plenty of tannin, this is undeniably a wine for patient connoisseurs, or as the French say, a vin de garde. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035." Robert Parker Wine Advocate 2003.

"A marvellous millennial Langoa! It has a very deep garnet core with just the first signs of ageing on the rim.

Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, 2000

Margaux

** 90 Points - Parker ***

"One of the finest examples I have tasted, the 2000 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux exhibits supple tannin along with big, sweet, luscious black currant flavors intermixed with hints of cedar, spice box, and vanilla. Plump and fleshy, with low acidity, it will offer delicious drinking now and over the next 10-15 years. Don't miss it." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2003.

Chateau d'Armailhac, 1999

Pauillac, 5th Growth classification

Tasting notes

The wine has a fine, rather vivid red colour with a ruby tint and a very open, complex nose on which fresh fruit (cherry, blackcurrant, redcurrant) and floral aromas (violet, lilac) mingle with denser notes of vanilla, tobacco leaf and cedarwood. The body builds rapidly from a substantial attack on round, harmonious tannins which unfold over elegant, well-integrated oak, developing a pleasant suggestion of liquorice, menthol and spice on the palate. The long, elegant finish displays highly refined tannins and lingering red fruit flavours.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1999

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

Château Haut-Brion's 1999 comes from a very good Bordeaux vintage for those producers who picked their crop selectively.

The 1999 Haut Brion is intensely aromatic, rich and concentrated. Their wines are consistently viewed as some of the very best in the entire Bordeaux region, including its fellow first growths of the Médoc.

Reviews..

"The Haut-Brion is certainly more expressive on the nose than their neighbours over the road, very good lift with blackberry, cedar, iodine, macerated black cherries, a touch of dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced, very elegant with svelte, fine tannins.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1999

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

This first growth reveals a remarkably complex nose with subtle new oak. The palate starts supple but finishes with great intensity. Although delicious now, this top rated wine has the structure to last.

Critical Acclaim
RP95
The Wine Advocate - "The 1999 Lafite Rothschild sports an engraved "1999" on the bottle along with an eclipse to mark that significant historical event of August, 1999. It is a quintessential offering from Lafite Rothschild. This prodigious wine is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast, and vanilla.

Chateau Latour, 1999

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Many regard Latour as the greatest of Bordeaux's Premier Crus. Their 1999 as been desribed as 'sensational', 'luscious' and 'exciting'. It's beautifully concentrated and impeccably balanced, with just the right amount of chewy tannin and fruit extraction, but with a slightly gentle level of acidity. Gobs of cassis and blackberry compote sit with smoky oak, mineral notes and a whiff of leather. Some regard it as the wine of the vintage, Parker awarded it 93-95 points and Jancis Robinson gave it a very hefty 18/20. Drinking now, until beyond 2030.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1999

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews:
"The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Chateau Yquem, 1998

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

‘A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel.
