In October 2019 We were offered the opportunity to purchase a small quantity of old Ferreira stocks. Centenary Solera 1845 Bual, Madeira

***92 points Wine Spectator***
Coffee-colored and cloudy, with a greenish rim, this has singed rubber and coffee aromas, with chocolate and molasses flavours accented by a lime note. Complex, rich and aggressive, with tangy balancing acidity, finishing on a bitter chocolate note. (4/1999)

Acquired from Christies, these bottles were taken from a bin marked as 1837.

One bottle (which was badly ullaged 25% remaining) was opened in Oct 2018. The following observations were made. "There is no marking on the cork or bottle, however the bottle manufacture is consistent with the period". There were no notes made as the wine was ullaged and the contents had oxidised.

Boal Solera 1826

1826: the year Thomas Jefferson, wine enthusiast, passed away. On 5 April, 2014, noted Madeira specialist Richard Mason wrote of this wine: “One of a set of solera wines released in the 1950s and 1960s. This was probably bottled between 1956 and 1960 and is based on the 1836 Campanário that Walter Grabham left to the Blandy family on his death in 1955. Deep mahogany colour; rich smoky nose, autumnal bonfires and a touch of forest floor; rich lemon and lime marmalade with lovely mouthfeel and texture, leading to a delicate marmalade finish. ”

Vintage Madeira

Provenance from Christies.

Some early 19th century bottles are found branded Rufino Teixeira and this is relative to the RT on this bottle. Teixeira is an old Madeira family, Tristão Vaz Teixeira being one of the first to discover the Island in the 15th century (in 1419, 600 years ago!)

In January 2019 we received the following email.
"Regarding the bottle of Madeira Wine "RT 1789" on sale, would like to inform you as follows;
The wine is Sercial and the bottle was painted by my grandfather, which was a Madeira Wine exporter around the year 1910.
The RT wine comes from my great-great-grandfather and RT means "Rufino Teixeira". …
