Chateau Haut Brion, 1964

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Excellent level | Very damaged label, Vintage Identified from cork - cut capsule

notes on 1964 Haut Brion
"... deep garnet core with a tawny rim. A light nose, touches of smoked wood, cedar, pain grille and soot. Nice definition but the fruit is all but dispensed with. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, nice tautness here, good depth but not complex. Fine tannins, dusty black fruit with hints of black olive towards the tobacco-tinged finish, that seems just a little sugary (chaptalized?) Certainly not a bad wine for the vintage more renowned on the Right Bank and it has held up well. Graceful and undemanding. Drink now. Tasted June 2009.

Chateau Latour, 1964

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Excellent provenance
Level in neck, bin soiled label
*** 97 Points Wine Journal ***

** 97 Points Wine Journal **
** 91 Points Robert Parker **

Reviews:
"This is an utterly delicious wine! A languid, almost sedate bouquet whose charms creep up on you, with macerated black cherries, clear honey, blackcurrant wine gums, glycerol and a touch of rose petal, strafed with breathtaking delineation, the palate is full-bodied, exuding a sense of controlled opulence. Cashmere tannins, quite glossy and plush with immense purity and class. Rounded towards the finish with sweet black cherries mixed with summer fruits, great tension and poise. I doubt I will ever encounter a finer example of this wine.

Chateau Margaux, 1964

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe (very top shoulder)

Critic tasting note: "If this was not the wine of the day it came real close. The unnaturally red color has only some orange nuances on the edge. The bouquet is an explosion of balsamic sensations, holly, tanned leather and lots of spice. The pepper is abundant as are the sensations of blood in the background. The mouthfeel is still taut thanks to an epic yet not invasive acidity that is in perfect balance within a structure of unique elegance. The fine and thick tannins have by now settled but tactilely lift everything to a higher level. A wine dreams are made of." - 99/100, Doctorwine

Chateau Latour, 1963

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru classe
(Upper shoulder - tear on label)
MAGNUM Bottle Format

The 1963 Latour has a garnet colour with some browning at the edges, a medium- to full-bodied feel, plenty of black currant fruit, and some light, soft tannins still present. Head and shoulders above the other first-growths, this wine has the classic Latour bouquet of walnuts, black currants, mineral scents, and cedar wood.

Chateau Durfort Vivens, 1962

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

Medium garnet in colour with yellowing and bricking towards the rim. This is very much alive. Wet leaves, forest floor, sweet tobacco, raspberry, red cherry, vanilla, and white flowers on the nose. There is a lot of sweetly perfumed classic Margaux aromatics. Secondary and tertiary notes dominate but there is still a lot of fruit left here leading to a nice long finish.

Chateau Latour, 1961

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Half Bottle
**100 Points Robert Parker**

The 1961 Latour is a wine legend!
Michael Broadbent rated it as one of his rare six-star wines, Robert Parker has consistently given it 100 points. This is a rare half bottle in good condition with a great level.

The 1961 crop was a small one, frost in May having wiped out most of the Merlot. The Latour team took pride in having picked – unlike some other properties – before excessive ripeness set in, allowing a perfectly balanced and appetising wine to be produced. The disastrous conditions in May meant that the crop was very small, and from the outset the château reported that the wines were dark, rich, ripe and incredibly concentrated but perfectly balanced.

Chateau Leoville Barton, 1961

St Julien 2eme Cru Classe

Robert Parker Writes
Tastings in the late eighties and nineties revealed a terrific, fully mature wine, splendidly perfumed with cedar, herbs, and sweet black fruits, rich, full-bodied, and long. Based on the best bottles, this wine is fully mature, but is capable of lasting for another decade. Anticipated maturity: now-2000. Last tasted 9/97.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1961

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
Mid to upper shoulder level

ROBERT PARKER: 95
Still a spectacular wine, the 1961 defies mortality. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish.

Chateau Montrose, 1961

St Estephe 2nd Growth Classification
**** 94 Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate (NM) ****
Bin soiled Labels

Château Montrose is located in the east of St Estèphe (the northern most of the great Médoc communes), just north of the hamlet of Marbuzet, on a gravel knoll only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary. As far as the great wines of Bordeaux go Château Montrose is somewhat of a youngster having been founded in 1815. However this beautiful vineyard has produced one of Bordeaux's most consistent and respected wines for over 150 years. It is considered to be one of the top St Estèphe's and is known as the “Latour of St Estèphe”.

Chateau Rauzan-Segla, 1961

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

The nose is attractive with dried orange peel, more fruit concentration than the 1966 with ripe blackberry, hedgerow and a touch of violets. The palate is medium-bodied, lacking the vigour and vivacity of the previous bottle but with good acidity. Briary, redcurrant and leather towards the finish.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1960

Pessac, Graves 1st Growth classification

A top class wine for the vintage. It is medium ruby with some amber/orange colour at the edges, possessing a light-intensity, fragrant bouquet suggestive of berry fruit and oak. On the palate, the flavours reveal fruit and concentration - very pleasant drinking from a wine of such age.
