Excellent level | Very damaged label, Vintage Identified from cork - cut capsule

notes on 1964 Haut Brion
"... deep garnet core with a tawny rim. A light nose, touches of smoked wood, cedar, pain grille and soot. Nice definition but the fruit is all but dispensed with. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, nice tautness here, good depth but not complex. Fine tannins, dusty black fruit with hints of black olive towards the tobacco-tinged finish, that seems just a little sugary (chaptalized?) Certainly not a bad wine for the vintage more renowned on the Right Bank and it has held up well. Graceful and undemanding. Drink now. Tasted June 2009.

Critic tasting note: "If this was not the wine of the day it came real close. The unnaturally red color has only some orange nuances on the edge. The bouquet is an explosion of balsamic sensations, holly, tanned leather and lots of spice. The pepper is abundant as are the sensations of blood in the background. The mouthfeel is still taut thanks to an epic yet not invasive acidity that is in perfect balance within a structure of unique elegance. The 1963 Latour has a garnet colour with some browning at the edges, a medium- to full-bodied feel, plenty of black currant fruit, and some light, soft tannins still present. Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

Medium garnet in colour with yellowing and bricking towards the rim. This is very much alive. Wet leaves, forest floor, sweet tobacco, raspberry, red cherry, vanilla, and white flowers on the nose. There is a lot of sweetly perfumed classic Margaux aromatics. Secondary and tertiary notes dominate but there is still a lot of fruit left here leading to a nice long finish.

The 1961 crop was a small one, frost in May having wiped out most of the Merlot. The Latour team took pride in having picked – unlike some other properties – before excessive ripeness set in, allowing a perfectly balanced and appetising wine to be produced. The disastrous conditions in May meant that the crop was very small, and from the outset the château reported that the wines were dark, rich, ripe and incredibly concentrated but perfectly balanced. …
