Croft Port, 1982

Vintage Port
***90 Points- Wine Advocate***

A medium-bodied Croft port, the 1982 vintage port has a light and fruity aroma, backed up by delicious dark fruits on the palate with a sweetness that hints at burnt sugar at times. A well composed port that will perhaps not age as well as other vintage ports from this era, but is beautifully poised for drinking now.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1981

Fratelli Pasqua

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.

Barbaresco, 1981

Carretta Tenuta - Bordino

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Barolo, 1981

Marchesi di Barolo, Piedmont

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Baron de Lustrac, 1981

Vintage Armagnac (Comes in original Lustrac Box as illustrated)

Baron de Lustrac is a small traditional éleveur specialising in fine old Armagnac vintages. Their extensive range is sourced from neighbouring estates in the Tenereze and Mas Armagnac regions and they keep an ageing and bottling chais near Magnan, in the Bas Armagnac region.

All Baron de Lustrac Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Perfect for big birthdays or as a special drink for the connoisseur as they truly are a fine example of the very best Armagnacs around.

Louis Roederer Cristal, 1981

Louis Roederer, Champagne

A rare bottle of 1981 Cristal from Louis Roederer

Review From Vinous tasting.
The 1981 Cristal is one of the biggest surprises of the night. Although it is fully mature, the 1981 is fabulous tonight. Hints of roasted almond, orange peel, caramel and spices suggest a fully mature wine, yet the 1981 has a sense of energy and overall symmetry that is impossible to miss. The 1981 won’t last forever, but it is without question one of the most rewarding vintages to drink today. Vinous 2014.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1980

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1980 Haut prion is a flattering, gentle, medium-bodied wine with a smoky, vanillin oakiness, round, ripe flavors, and a soft, luscious finish. It lacks some guts and richness by the standards of most Haut-Brion vintages since 1978, but, nevertheless, it is a charming, lighter-weight, forward wine that has reached its plateau of maturity.

Dow's, 1980

Vintage Port

The 1980 Dows Vintage Port has a very dark red/black centre, dark red to brown rim. On the nose there are creamy, blackberries and black cherries, slightly herbal notes (good), smoke and wet stone, sweet. The Dow 1980 has a very complex palate, maturity, red currants and black cherries, herbs and smoked meats, in the middle acidity and tannin (still!), great length - 60 seconds plus of blackberries and plums. This is an extraordinary Dow.

Gould Campbell Vintage Port, 1980

Vintage Port

From a much underrated vintage and house, this is a truly excellent Vintage Port. Although hugely enjoyable now, this will fully reward a few more years of patience and can be enjoyed for many years to come.

Reviews
"Dark color. Doesn't look like a 32 year old wine. Very drinkable. The tannins have resolved, but the fruit is still quite strong. This is not yet at peak. Very good balance. Excellent wine!" Cellar Tracker

Taylor Fladgate, 1980

Vintage Port

An outstanding wine scoring 91 points.

Review: "A deep, clear garnet colour. The nose is very backward, quite austere and conservative with notes of cherry and raspberry leaf, a touch of cigar box developing with aeration. It perhaps lacks a little joie-de-vivre, especially when compared to vintage in the 1970s. the palate is attractive though, with notes of raspberry, plum, white pepper, blood orange and a touch of apricot. Very good acidity, perhaps like the -55, this is a Taylor's playing it safe, unwilling to take chances and yet it is lush on the finish with its plum and briary flavours.

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1979

St Julien 2nd Growth Classification

**Cellar tracker review - 2013**
Clear ruby red with almost no bricking. Classic St. Julien nose with black currants, tobacco leaves and some pencil shavings. No signs of oxidation. On the palate surprisingly vigorous for a wine with 37 years under its belt. Acidity clearly dominates the almost completely resolved tannins. Slightly astringent towards the medium+ finish. A very impressive effort from Gruaud Larose in a rather weak vintage.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

From the famously tannic 1979 vintage, this Lafite is proving the more dismissive critics from earlier days wrong as it settles harmoniously into maturity with plenty of life and complexity remaining. At K&L, we are champions of great wines from lesser vintages, and here is a perfectly mature First Growth from a lesser vintage that may not be out of reach in price. Fans of classic wines from the Left Bank with preferences that favor the leathery and refined end of the spectrum will find much to appreciate here.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1979

St Julien 2me Growth Classification

A deep tawny rim with a mahogany core. This has a delightful nose, very good intensity with notes of cooked meats, roasted chestnut, toffee and a touch of marzipan. It smells as if it is from a hot vintage! After five minutes in the glass, it become a little muffled but develops a touch of mint. The palate certainly has more fruit concentration than the 1980, a rounded texture, quite sharp acidity with notes of sour cherry, a touch of leather and a dry, rather gamey, but attenuated finish. Not bad for a 1979

Chateau Siran, 1979

Margaux Cru Bourgeois

From the very good 1979 vintage this Siran has a beautiful mature bouquet with black currants, tobacco and bitterness. Juicy, good sweet and bitterness. The aftertaste is not extremely long, but has good sweetness and even some good tannin. Although completely mature there is some power left and this wine is a true pleasure to drink.

Graham's Port, 1979

New

Late Bottled Vintage Port (Magnum format 150cl)

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.

Petrus, 1978

Pomerol
