Bual, Madeira

The 1920 Bual is one of Blandy’s most iconic Madeira wines. The nose is complex and intense, revealing dry fruits, exotic spices, vanilla, followed by some smoky notes, cedar oil and balsamic. "This brings back a fond memory of a long lost friend, Paul Napolitano from NY. He once opened this identical Port for me years ago at his home and at the time, it was the finest Colheita I had experienced, as well as the oldest. This one was bottled in 1976 or 1977. A piece is torn off the label and makes it impossible to be certain. Dark coffee color with a greenish edge. Is this Madeira? A nose of bouillon cube, scents of sea breeze and toffee, reminiscent of a Malvasia and the richness and supple spine live up to that mindset. The palate is packed with copious caramel and fig flavors along with prunes and toffee intricately woven into a neat little package. …

Manzanilla Extra Dry Sherry
Barbadillo

Manzanilla is Barbadillo’s speciality and this excellent example has been aged for 3 years in Barbadillo’s cellars.

Fino style Sherries age under a layer of “flor” (a naturally occurring layer of yeast that grows on top of the wine in the barrel); this ensures the wines do not oxidise as there is no exposure to the air. The cooler maritime microclimate of Sanlúcar ensures flor grows particularly thickly all year round producing these very fresh, tangy Manzanillas, unlike the more oxidised Finos aged in the inland town of Jerez, where the flor dies back in the winter and summer months.

Champagne Napoleon Cognac

An old release of Bisquite Cognac with an average age of 20 years. Bisquit is produced in Jarnac, in the Petite Champagne region of Cognac. We estimate that this was bottled during the 1960s.
Legend has it that Napoleon took crates of Courvoisier Cognac into exile with him to the island of St Helena, and the crew coined the Cognac as "Napoleon's Cognac".

Tasting Notes
Elegant copper highlights, a lingering bouquet, and a powerful, round flavour make this a very distinguished cognac. The oaky characteristics and candied fruit flavours coat the palate after the first sip.

Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle. Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage. Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.

The nose had more than its fair share of balsamic and Madeira notes, but also a nice blush of dried cherries and berries, earth and cigarette smoke, and beyond that a lovely waft of perfumy florals. Rutherglen Muscat is one of Australia's unique and richest styles of wine. In order to make it, Muscat grapes are left to raisin on the vine and then partially fermented before being fortified with grape spirit and aged in cask in a very hot climate for a long time.
