Late Bottled Vintage Port (Magnum format 150cl)

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.

Vintage Port

Orange in colour, with a very pale orange rim. Stewed fruit on the nose; sweet, but cut with a lovely lime acidity. Sweet entry, a touch hollow but a pleasant medicinal fruitiness - a touch of harshness in the mid-palate. A lovely, sweet aniseed balls aftertaste; some heat in the middle fo the finish, which fades slowly and enjoyably.

This wine really lives up to the nature of the vintage. Tannins still present , but sufficient fruit to balance the wine. Just a bit of bricking, slight sedimentation, colour still dark purple. Floral fruity nose, with a trace of iron. Slight chalky finish, clearly more tannic than it's age suggests. Suggest something meaty to go with the tannins.

The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Beautiful pale tawny in colour. The 50-Year-Old Tawny is exceptionally pronounced and complex in aroma profile. Taylor's - the masters of wine-making - produced a rather fine single quinta wine in the Quinta de Vargellas 1972.
