The 1972 Chateau Pavie is fully mature and like so many wines from this vintage is in steep decline. One note found indicates that wine was way past its prime, but in fact it was still drinkable. Vintage Port

The 1970 Butler Nephew Vintage is a top quality vintage port produced before the company was purchased by Gonzalas Byas and entered into decline. The wine is dark (60% opaque), light nose of candy and vanilla. Very sweet with a full body and serious backbone. A mixture of black cherries, raisins, dates and licorice on the palate overlaid with a little lavender. The backbone does balances some of the sweetness which leads to a long, long finish. TC (2019).

A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. 80-120 g/l residual sugar usually, vinified at the domaine, which doubles as a very good Catalan restaurant, or cave auberge, in Rivesaltes village itself.
Deep ruby/tawny. Raisiny and lots of acidity. A little gritty. Rancio after long, warm wood-ageing of a blend of Grenache of all three colours. There may also be a little Muscat Alexandre in blends this ‘young’.

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king.
