The spirit is clean with a gentle floral edge. There are dried fig, raisin, chocolate and liquorice smells. It is lacy and ethereal in the mouth. It has good cut and detail right through the palate and one is left with a wonderful inner mouth perfume once the wine is swallowed.

The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it's worth revisiting in the USA, since it's a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per litre of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavours that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Delaforce was founded in 1834, when John Fleurriet Delaforce was asked by his London employer to set up a new Port wine company for the partners of Martinez Gassinot. Delaforce rapidly became established as one of the leading Port wine companies developing its sales worldwide. Between 1894 and 1906 the company was distinguished with a warrant as supplier of Port wine to the Portuguese Royal Household. The company still exists today but was acquired by the Taylor-Fladgate Fonseca group in 2001.

The 1955 Vintage Produced some high-class ports and the 1955 Cockburn is no exception! This is a great bottle of old port. The 1955 Cockburn's retains subtle fruitiness along with toffee, smoke, and dark chocolate notes. All of the flavors were melded together and the port was slightly sweet without even a trace of alcohol. Great port!

The 1955 was the only year declared by Fonseca in the 50s. An underrated, indeed almost forgotten, vintage that deserves to be rediscovered.

Notes on the year
The year was marked by an excellent ripening season with hot weather in July and August meaning that the crop was perfectly mature towards the end of September. Most of the well known shippers declared 1955.

Tasting Note
Medium to deep red, with a remarkably youthful ruby edge. Incredible richness and almost young grapey fruit character. As it breathes it opens to reveal spicy mature dark fruit aromas. On the palate it fills the mouth with round, marzipan richness mixed with full chocolate flavour. …

The 1955 Martinez Vintage Port has a "Deep red colour, clear centre, pale orange on the rim. A lovely nose of oranges and tobacco. Sweet entry, with the oranges - blood oranges - dominating the initial flavours. Lots of acidity giving the fruit plenty of support. The texture thickens in the mouth - great development, thick and flavourful. Excellent wine. Enormous aftertaste. Cedar wood, cranberries and with a lovely sweetness lasting all the way through the long length. Improved in the glass for the short time it remained in there!
