Kopke, 1944
Colheita Port, Douro
An outstanding 1944 Single Harvest Colheita port.
This 1944 Port from Kopke, the worlds oldest port house is a true rarity. There are no remaining stocks at Kopke and so these are some of the last bottles for sale.
This port has a bright amber colour with a brown-tawny halo. Elegant nose of dried fruits, well integrated with wood notes. Light and fragrant, with wonderful volume and structure. A wine with great freshness and multi-dimensional flavours. Delicate and persistent finish.
Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. This is a contrast to vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. …

B Seppelt and Sons, SA, 1 pint and 6 fl oz (650ml)
Sweet Wine
Established in 1851 by Joseph Seppelt, the winery flourished in the 20th century as part of the Seppelt family's expanding interests in the liquor industry, which grew to include vineyards and wineries across various Australian regions. The Seppelts maintained ownership until 1985, when the winery entered a period of corporate ownership which lasted until 2007. Seppeltsfield is now owned by Warren Randall - a qualified viticulturist and winemaker who worked for the Seppelt family during the 1980s. Randall has led a Seppeltsfield renaissance by developing its vineyard holdings on the 'Western Ridge' of the Barossa Valley and restoring the winery's heritage listed buildings, including the prized 1888 Gravity Cellar. …

Graham's Port, 1942
Vintage Port, DOC Douro In neck, badly chipped capsule, unlabelled
Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.
Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

1940 Kopke Single Harvest Tawny Port
The year is 1940, we are in the Douro valley,in the ancient Quinta de São Luiz. 1940 was a difficult year, but the quality of the berries suggested a long life for the wines of this harvest.Over the next decades and generations, there were many opportunities and sustained pressure to launch this nectar onto the market. The world changed and societies evolved. Despite all this, this wine was kept for 80 long years in a cellar that resisted time. But all good things come to those who wait. VINIFICATION AND AGEING
Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful skin maceration and constant churning during fermentation aimed at producing white wines full of colour and structure, with enough phenolic compounds to support a long ageing in wood. This fermentation takes place in vats (lagares) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A wine of high quality, made from one single harvest. …

Stored undergound at constant temperature for several decades in a private cellar.
A unique masterpiece from Niepoort.
Currently, Niepoort is the only Port house which produces Garrafeira-style Ports.
The second generation of the Niepoort family, in the late 19th century, had the fortunate idea of buying from a german glass factory in Oldenburg about 4000 glass balloons (in the form of old apothecary bottles) of dark-green glass with varying capacities from 8 to 11 litres. Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk’s grandfather, gave purpose to the demijohns by bottling the best wines of the 1931 harvest, thus creating the type “Garrafeira Niepoort”. …

In the mouth, it’s very concentrated, spicy and lively, with liquorice and darker treacle toffee notes. There’s a trace of bitterness to its slightly spirity finish, but it’s deliciously spicy with plenty of vigour." Sarah Amhed, The Wine Detective
