Eiswein, 1980
Jacob Gerhardt Neirsteiner Schlosskellerein, Auslese Eiswein
The 1980 Eiswein is a sweet dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing for a more concentrated grape juice to develop.
The high residual sugar concentration give these wines great ageing properties - we tasted this bottle over two days. Served chilled from the fridge after a 2 hour decant. The colour is a mid-amber with green tinge around the rim of the glass. Oxidative notes on the nose, burnt molasses apricots, apple jam, tertiary notes and fruits. On the palate there is characteristic eiswein acidity a little'tart' bitterness. …

Fonseca Port, 1980
Vintage Port
The Fonseca 1980 Vintage Port is a rich ruby colour, fading gently at the rim. Scents of spice, raisin and fruit cake. Soft, sweet and ever so slightly plump.
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. …

Bairrada, 1979
Frei Joao - Reserva - MAGNUM
Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, …
