Quevedo

quevedo-port

Quevedo is a beautiful gem of a producer that is very highly regarded amongst port aficionados. Family owned for over 100 years, the estate is now in the capable hands of Oscar and Claudia the new generation of wine makers. Together, they have developed and innovated to produce an outstanding portfolio of ports.

The Quevedo family have been making port wine for generations however their produce was for merchants based in Vila Nova de Gaia. But when Portugal joined the European Union in 1986, legislation changed to allow both grape growers and wineries in the Douro to export their wines directly to the retailer. And as a result of this new legislation, the family brand “Quevedo” was born.

The Quevedo cellar is located in S. Joao da Pesqueira, a small town in the heart of Douro Valley. With 112 hectares of vineyards in prime locations, a modern winery and generations of knowledge and it is easy to see why the ports are consistently rated as outstanding.

Vintage Port is the traditional gift for marking special family occasions, particularly the birth of a child. Vintage Port has an extraordinary ability to age gracefully for 75 years or more, developing from a structured, powerful and robust young wine into a sophisticated and elegant wine in middle age and then on to a delicate and ethereal beauty that will continue for decades.

Given that Port is usually not released until the second spring after a particular vintage is harvested, it was previously difficult to buy a case of Port as a commemorative gift as it would have to be done retrospectively.

Claudia's Reserve White Douro Wine 2022
***89 Points - Wine Advocate***

The 2022 Claudia's Branco Reserve is a blend of Gouveio (52%), Viosinho (25%), Códega (18%) and Folgasão for the rest, all aged for eight months in one-third new French and Hungarian oak. It comes in at 12.9% alcohol. This handles its oak flawlessly, which means that the fruit shines through and the freshness takes control. There's a juicy and tasty finish with just a little acidic bite. I'm not sure this will evolve much if you age it, but it might hold on and become more interesting over the next couple of years. There's not a lot of concentration, but the rest is very fine. Drink this on its own or with lighter foods.

Vintage Port, Douro
***91-93 points - Mark Squires***

Announcing the new release of the 2021 Vintage Port from Quevedo - exclusively available in the UK from Vintage Wine and Port.

The Quevedo 2021 Vintage Port was born in the very good 2021 vintage. The weather returned to more normal patterns after a couple of years of drought and extreme heat. as with other Ports from this vintage the Quevedo stands out for its freshness and elegance.

Our notes: The Quevedo 2021 Vintage Port is a field blend of hand-harvested grapes from the family-owned vineyard on the plateau of São João da Pesqueira. The deep purple in colour, there is an engaging nose of ripe black cherries, aniseed and violets.

Claudia's Reserve Red
Douro Wine
***89 Points- Wine Advocate***
Special offer | Was £16.95 | Now £13.95

Claudia’s Reserve is produced from a careful selection of grapes from our best Quintas. We don’t follow a recipe, the composition will vary from year to year, as we blend what nature gives us. The 2020 red displays the elegant and pure style of Douro, while respecting its wild roots.

Dark cherry in colour, expressive aromas of dark berries combined with notes of wild flowers. The 2020 reserve red has dark fruit flavours like juicy blackberry and ripe plum, rounded out with a touch of spice from oak barrel aging and a long, luxurious finish.

The year 2020 experienced unusual heat throughout all seasons but with adequate levels of rainfall, resulting in good, albeit rapid, grape maturation.

Vintage Port, Douro

Quevedo Offer: Buy 6 or more bottles and Save 25%

Oscar and Claudia Quevedo have recently declared their 2020 Quevedo Vintage port. This follows their acclaimed 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages.

The 2020 harvest across the Douro was the smallest this century and when coupled with production and manpower issues caused by the pandemic, many producers did not declare. Those that did such as Quevedo and a few others, produced some amazing Ports that are rich, structured and deep that will mature over decades.

We first tasted this in April 2022 at the Big Fortified Tasting, It was very rich, round and thrilling. Dense and pure with a backbone and firm structure.

Late Bottled Vintage Port, Douro
***90 Points - Robert Parker***
Special Offer | Was £24.95 | Now £17.95

A 2018 Late Bottled Vintage Port Wine from Quevedo.

The 2018 Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) is a traditionally styled (lightly filtered but not cold stabilized) blend of Touriga Franca (35%), Touriga Nacional (15%), Tinta Roriz (20%), Tinta Barroca (22%) and Tinto Cão filling out the blend. It was bottled in May 2023 with a long cork and 84 grams of residual sugar after aging for three years in large French vats. Expressive and fruit-forward in its its dry fashion, this adds some structure, but the tannins are never too hard. It is easy to drink now. The depth is average and the power is controlled, although there is some bite on the finish.

Sourced from the winery's quintas at Vale d’Agodinho and Trovisca, this is dry, light and lifted. It's not the richest and deepest of the LBVs I've seen from this producer, but its focus and the length on the finish are superb. Very expressive as well, this shows brilliantly just now. It can also age and develop if you want to hold it.

The 2016 Quevedo Vintage Port Wine is a deep dark ruby with violet undertones, and the nose offers lush plum, grape and blueberry aromas supported by rich spice notes, a lovely combination of freshness and intensity. On the palate dense, powerful fruit and rich tannins are well balanced, robust and compact, just what you want for a classic Vintage Port.

Notes from Quevedo: "At this point it seems every year is an “atypical” year for weather in the Douro, and 2016 gave us challenges different from 2015’s atypical pattern. The winter months were warmer than usual and January and February wetter by far than the historical averages.
