Description

1956 Mirafiore Barbaresco

Overview:

An exceptionally rare Barbaresco from the historic Mirafiore estate, this 1956 vintage offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional Piedmontese winemaking from one of the region's classic post-war vintages. Now approaching seventy years of age, the wine is fully mature, displaying the aromatic complexity, elegance and tertiary character for which long-lived Nebbiolo is renowned.

Appearance:

Brick-garnet in colour with tawny-orange highlights at the rim, reflecting extensive maturation and graceful evolution.

Nose:

Highly evolved and expressive, revealing dried rose petal, sour cherry and redcurrant, layered with leather, tobacco leaf and gentle spice. Notes of tea leaf, dried orange peel and subtle balsamic nuances develop with aeration, adding further complexity and aromatic lift.

Palate:

Delicate yet remarkably poised, with fully resolved tannins and Nebbiolo's characteristic acidity providing freshness and structure. Flavours of dried cherry, cranberry and savoury red fruit are complemented by notes of tea leaf, tobacco and subtle spice. The emphasis is firmly on harmony, finesse and tertiary complexity rather than fruit concentration, reflecting the wine's exceptional maturity.

Finish:

Long, graceful and contemplative, with lingering notes of dried flowers, gentle spice and savoury complexity.

Decanting:

Stand upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer and allow up to 1 hour of gentle aeration before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common with wines of this age; any cork fragments should be removed during decanting.

About the Producer:

Mirafiore is one of Piedmont's most historic wine estates, with origins dating back to the nineteenth century. Long associated with traditional Langhe winemaking, the estate has built its reputation on classically styled Nebbiolo wines that emphasise elegance, longevity and a strong expression of regional character.
