Description
The 1988 Château Cissac is a mature Haut-Médoc that demonstrates the classic structure and elegance for which this respected estate is known. Located close to Saint-Estèphe in the northern Médoc, Château Cissac has earned a reputation for producing traditional Bordeaux that rewards patient ageing. After more than three decades in bottle, this vintage offers a fascinating opportunity to experience the evolution of a well-crafted Left Bank claret.
Château Cissac has a long and distinguished history within the Haut-Médoc, with vineyards planted on gravel-rich soils ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate has consistently produced wines that balance ripe fruit, firm structure and freshness, resulting in bottles capable of developing considerable complexity with age. The 1988 vintage, while more restrained than some neighbouring years, is admired for its balance, classic character and longevity.
The bouquet is beautifully mature, displaying aromas of dried blackcurrants, cassis and red berries, accompanied by notes of cedarwood, tobacco leaf and cigar box. As the wine opens in the glass, layers of leather, forest floor and earthy spice emerge, creating an elegant and complex aromatic profile that reflects its years of bottle development.
On the palate, the wine is refined and harmonious, with softened tannins supporting flavours of dried dark fruits, cedar and savoury earth. Fresh acidity provides balance and lift, while subtle notes of tobacco, spice and woodland character add further depth. The finish is long and graceful, displaying the understated charm and sophistication that mature Haut-Médoc wines can offer.
Now fully mature, the 1988 Château Cissac is drinking beautifully and is best enjoyed over the coming years. Carefully decant to remove sediment and serve alongside roast lamb, beef Wellington, venison or mature cheeses. A classic mature Bordeaux that captures the timeless appeal and traditional character of the Haut-Médoc.
