The 1959 has a captivating, beautifully defined nose where all three varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot seem to in absolute harmony, each contributing their own individual virtues. That hint of mint common throughout mature Figeacs becomes more and more present in the glass, as does a hint of balsamic. The palate is not quite as entrancing as the nose: slightly less corpulent that I was anticipating nonetheless with stunning balance and precision. A touch of spice, dried blood, leather and black tea towards the finish that develops a lovely Burgundian silkiness with time. An ethereal Figeac, certainly superior here, to the ’61.
