Description

The 1981 Clos du Clocher Magnum is a rare and increasingly scarce example of mature Pomerol from one of the appellation's most respected family-owned estates. Produced on the celebrated clay and gravel soils of the Pomerol plateau, Clos du Clocher has long been recognised for crafting wines that combine the richness of Merlot with the structure and aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc. The large-format magnum bottle has helped preserve the wine's freshness and longevity, allowing it to age more gracefully than standard bottles.

Founded by the Audy family in the 1920s, Clos du Clocher occupies a privileged position close to some of Pomerol's most famous vineyards. The estate has earned a reputation for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines that express the distinctive character of the plateau's iron-rich clay soils. Although production remains relatively small, the château has consistently delivered wines of refinement and authenticity, making older vintages increasingly sought after by collectors.

After more than four decades of bottle ageing, the 1981 vintage displays a beautifully evolved bouquet of dried black fruits, cedar, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Notes of truffle, leather and autumn leaves emerge with time in the glass, accompanied by subtle hints of spice and earthy complexity. Mature Pomerol lovers will appreciate the wine's nuanced and tertiary character.

The palate is elegant rather than powerful, reflecting both the vintage and its age. Soft, resolved tannins support flavours of dried cherry, plum, tobacco and savoury earth, while a thread of freshness maintains balance and lift. The magnum format often allows greater depth and vitality, making well-stored examples particularly rewarding to drink today.

Now fully mature, the 1981 Clos du Clocher Magnum is best enjoyed over the next few years. Decant gently to remove sediment and serve alongside roast lamb, beef Wellington, game birds, mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses. A fascinating mature Bordeaux that offers charm, complexity and a glimpse into the history of Pomerol.
