Graham’s ‘The Stone Terraces’ 2016 Vintage Port is a sublime, inspirational wine! It displays a deep purple colour, so concentrated as to be opaque, with a delightful aroma of orange blossom and peach. Opulent, silky smooth, yet concentrated black fruit flavours seduce the palate. Schist tannins reveal a beautifully sculpted structure, the lovely acidity giving effortless balance.

The 2016 Vintage is the third ‘Stone Terraces’ Vintage Port produced by Graham’s. The previous bottlings in 2011 and 2015 have received very positive acclaim. There can be few wines in the world made with such concentration whilst also displaying such finesse, with no over-ripeness and a remarkably fresh acidity on the finish.

This wine hails from the magnificent 18th century stone terraces to the north and east of the estate house at Quinta dos Malvedos. When W & J Graham purchased the property in 1890, they set about recreating the necessary vineyard conditions to produce the finest Ports in the Douro.

A superbly intense wine of great concentration, this has a generous structure and abundant ripe-fruit tones. Its tannins are fully intact, promising an immensely long aging period. It's rich, but also fresh in acidity and juicy black-fruit flavors. Drink from 2029.

Liquorice and black fruits the nose has a mix of flavours the richness backed by mineral freshness. The palate starts with bitter chocolate and rich ripe fruit the mid palate fleshy the tannins ripe. It seems slightly understated at the back with hints of black pepper spice quite firm yet richer on the finish with black cherry and damsons. 2038-70

Mostly Touriga Nacional from traditional stone-walled terraces at Quinta dos Malvedos, Graham’s flagship estate. The vineyards mostly face north and east: inky blue-black colour; closed, intense with a hint of liquorice and dark chocolate, big and dense with bitter-sweet dark chocolate intensity and broad tannins rising in the mouth to a massive peacock’s tail of a finish. A ‘wow’ of a wine. 350 cases produced.

“The 2016 is certainly absolutely outstanding; but does its absence from the main Graham’s 2016 rob it of a vital ingredient? Very dark crimson. Heady and malty on the nose. Really exciting and vibrant. This wine almost presents a case for going wholesale from vintage blends to single-vineyard bottlings. Rich and sinewy and polished and with massive acidity too but not too much. This has great individual personality. Aromas of nuts, dried fruits and citrus peel.

***97/100 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate***
"The 2016 The Stone Terraces Vintage Port, from a specific plot, is predominantly Touriga Nacional. It comes in with 110 grams of residual sugar and was bottled about a month before this tasting. Along with the Capela from Vesuvio, this is a candidate both for the best of the Symington stable and the top wine in this vintage. But they are very different."
