Description

On 6th February 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

“To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, Taylor’s Port, a Royal Warrant Holder to HM The Queen decided to bottle a Very Very Old Tawny Port. This exceptional
Port is drawn from our extensive reserves of the finest wood aged wines since the Queen succeeded to the throne, silently attesting to Her Majesty’s extraordinary reign as the longest serving Monarch in British history.” stated Adrian Bridge, Managing Director of Taylor’s: “We are delighted to celebrate such an exceptional commemoration with the launch of a unique Port wine. The perfect glass to raise a toast to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

Taylor’s has an extensive and enviable library of very old Ports which represent the cream of their aged reserves and on very rare occasions these wines have been released in extremely limited quantities. These Tawny ports are a far cry from vintage port with very slow and gentle ageing in oak casks creating ports of extreme aromatic complexity with delightfully mellow structures.

Very Very Old Port is a new category of Port that has been approved by the Port Wine Institute and has been created for very old blended Tawny Ports without a specific age denomination. The Taylor’s Platinum Jubilee edition is a blend of wines, some of which are more than 90 years old, others over 80 years. As a result, it is difficult to say exactly how old the wine is but we can safely say that it has been ageing for at least as long as the Queen has been on the throne. However, under IVDP regulations, we are not allowed to state its exact age.

Over the years, Taylor’s has released a number of very valuable, limited edition Ports of great age. These include the very rare SCION from 1855 and the Taylor’s 1863 Single Harvest Port, one of the last pre-Phylloxera wines to be offered for sale. The Platinum Jubilee Very Very Old Tawny Port is the latest of these very rare releases.

With just 2,000 bottles produced, quantities are extremely limited. This a sublime wine to celebrate an extraordinary reign.

Tasting Note: Rich mahogany with a pale ochre rim. An opulent, heady nose overlaid with cigar box, roasted coffee, pressed rose petals and a hint of ginger. An intense, heather honey bouquet with some singed leather, scents of fine oak, five spice and figs. Beautiful aromatic structure which dances on your nose, enticing you in for your first sip.

On the palate wonderful concentration and bright, racy acidity. Notes of anise, marzipan, quince, scorched orange peel, molasses, cardamom and a subtle hint of butterscotch. The symphony of flavours that awaken your senses are precise, in balance and alluring. An astonishingly refined and well-formed mature tawny port. The perfect way to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
