1964 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian:

Visit our 1964 Wine and Port Offer Page

An outstanding 5-star vintage in Piedmont and Tuscany that produced wines of immense grandeur. The depth of the bouquet and the fullness of flavour came together with rounded tannins to produce immense wines of character and dimension. Growers could leave the grapes on the vine to become ripe, and harvest went on until mid-November to give a large crop.

Bordeaux:

In Bordeaux, the red wines from the 1964 vintage were generally characterized by a lighter and more elegant style. They may not have the power, richness, or aging potential of some of the top vintages, but they can still offer pleasant drinking experiences. The harvest and weather favoured those producers on the right bank who harvested early (Graves, St Emilion and Pomerol).

Portugal: 1964-vintage-portA bottle of port from 1964 makes the perfect 60 year old wine gift in 2024, whether for a birthday or anniversary. Our wine buyer recommends the single harvest colheita ports such as the 1964 Messias Colheita Port , as these are drinking very well. They also come with the added advantage that they can be savoured for months after opening. The 1964 port vintage was a challenging year due to fluctuating weather conditions; a small amount of single quinta port was made but it is very rare. However, some truly excellent single harvest Colheitas were produced. The weather at the start of the year was unsettled, with rain and thunderstorms at the end of July followed by a hot, dry August which developed the vines. The hot weather continued throughout the season and into the harvest, when it began to fluctuate. The grapes harvested were more raisin than the winemakers would like and this is reflected in the small amounts of port produced.

Spain: 1964 has been known as the 'vintage of the century' for Rioja. Tastings of various wines from different estates and classifications reveal the same incredible sweet fruit, vibrancy and youthfulness. An excellent vintage for Spain.

Janneau, 1964

Armagnac 1964 Vintage

The great vintages or millésimés of Janneau are the expression of a single year, most commonly of a single cask. Produced exclusively with the single distillation process, they are the quintessence of this precious distillate aged over the years. Each vintage expresses its unique character. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a sharp contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish.

J.P.O Malvasia Reserva Madeira, Garrafeira Particular

A very rare Madeira, the J.P.O displays an intensely rich nose and a full mouthful of raisins and caramel, a long powerful finish and finely balanced acidity belying its relative youth. Showing incredible concentration but also a degree of finesse.

Nebbiolo, 1964

Bersano - Riserva

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1964

Quinta do Noval Nacional- Vintage Port.

1964 Quinta do Noval Nacional is undoubtedly one of the most legendary fortified wines in the world. It is produced from a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines that have remained untouched by Phylloxera

"Palish red-brown. Currant, fresh herbs, coffee and mellow wood tones on the slightly shallow, evolved nose. Offers an attractive mid-palate sweetness but comes across as quite light, finishing with slightly drying tannins and a sugary, caramel-like quality. Faded with air. "This has been on a plateau for the last 20 years," noted Seely. I'd drink it over the next ten years.
