In 1967, the gods favored Italy, blessing both Tuscany and Piedmont with an exceptionally fine vintage often touted as the "vintage of the decade". Bordeaux was also good but a touch on the light side, with the best wines being from Pomerol. Burgundy was similar. Port was also reasonably good, but it was really Italy’s year. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 59 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1967 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Burmester 1967 Colheita Port
  • Barbaresco 1967 Gaja
  • Barolo 1967 Giordano
  • Chateau Margaux 1967 1er Grand Cru Classe
  • Chateau Mouton Cadet 1967 Baron Philippe de Rothschild

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first scheduled colour television broadcasts from six transmitters covering the main population centres in England began on BBC2 for certain programmes, the first being live coverage from the Wimbledon Championships. A full colour service (other than news programmes) began on BBC2 on 2 December.
Eurovision: UNITED KINGDOM with the song "Puppet on a String" by Sandie Shaw
Top Grossing Movie: The Jungle Book

Bordeaux: The 1967 vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.

Italian: 1967 Italian wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.

Portugal: Making a great wine gift for any birthday or anniversary, the 1967 port vintage is a very good vintage that was somewhat overshadowed by the exceptional 1966. It was declared by about 15 shippers. The 1967 ports showed well at recent tastings; they have good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

    Sandeman, 1967
    Vintage Port

    Summary

Sandeman 1967 Vintage Port is a rare and mature example from a small but respected vintage in the Douro. With nearly six decades of bottle ageing, the wine has evolved into a beautifully complex and harmonious Vintage Port, showing the elegance and subtlety that only long cellaring can bring.

    Tasting Notes

Now displaying a deep tawny-garnet colour with a softened rim, the wine opens with a beautifully developed bouquet of dried figs, walnut, old leather and cedar, layered with hints of spice and dark chocolate.

On the palate it is smooth and refined,

    Single Harvest Tawny Port
    Presented in Taylor's Beechwood case

Taylors have just announced a limited release of their 1967 Single Harvest Tawny Port. This is a new release of a rich, mellow and spicy 1967 Single Harvest Port.

It is presented in a classic Taylor’s frosted bottle, and packaged in a high quality beech-wood box.

During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. The smooth velvety palate is lifted by a crisp acidity which gives the wine an attractive freshness in spite of its age.

    Tokaji, 1967

    Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Monimpex
    Sweet White Wine

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labelling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous.

    Valtellina, 1967

    Coop Villa

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

    Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, 1967

    Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
    Magnum Bottle (150cl)

1967 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste – A Mature Pauillac with Historic Charm
The 1967 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste comes from a vintage that, while not among Bordeaux’s most renowned, offers a fascinating look at how classic Pauillac wines evolve over time. The 1967 growing season was marked by cooler weather and rain during harvest, which led to wines that were more delicate and initially best suited for earlier drinking. However, well-stored bottles from top châteaux like Grand-Puy-Lacoste, known for its structured and Cabernet Sauvignon-driven style, can still provide a refined and nuanced tasting experience.
