The 1969 Beychevelle is fully mature and scores and average of over 92 Points on Cellartracker. A typical review is "Garnet colour. But surprisingly dark and red for its age. A leafy nose. Cigars and green vegetables. High acidity. Medium bodied. A lean palate. Fruit has subsided. Quite secondary and tertiary now. Definitely time to drink up but has aged gracefully." Apricots on the nose, sweet glycerin. On the palate it is well evolved full of ripe fruit, botrytis and although it is low in vitality it still makes for a superb experience. Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

A year with a wet spring and cooler-than-average weather until July. Heavy rain fell in mid-September, followed by three weeks of dry weather and two small windows of opportunity around the 20th of October that were taken advantage of to pick most of the crop. The ensuing four weeks of rain ruined the remaining grapes. A small production for this discreet, medium-sweet vintage of Yquem.

Medium garnet-colored with considerable amber at the edge, the flavors were dry and angular, and there was considerable astringent tannin in the finish. Nevertheless, the bouquet was classic Pauillac and Lynch Bages - sweet and cedary, with plenty of herb-tinged black fruits, smoked meat, and game-like notes. The 1969 Chateau Margaux has been fully mature for more than two decades. It is medium ruby with some amber/orange colour at the edges, possessing a light-intensity, fragrant bouquet suggestive of berry fruit and oak. On the palate, the flavours reveal adequate fruit and concentration, but the acidity is sharp in the finish.

High Shoulder

Lovely colour, mature but lively appearance; clean nose, lovely vinous warmth, cassis and cedar and mint, classic Pauillac; lovely and lively palate, cassis flavours, complete for a 1969, lively acidity in check; clean and dry finish, good length. Much better than the bottle from the same cellar tasted ten years ago. Rating applies to the first 15 minutes after opening, loses its definition very quickly after that.
