1983 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: The 1983 wine vintage is rated as very good for the regions of Tuscany and Piedmont. The vintage produced rich, structured, full-bodied wines that are still drinking well today.

Bordeaux: The 1983 vintage produced wines of mixed quality, with some excellent wines from the Margaux region. A tropical humid heat-wave in August led to over-ripening in some regions, but those Chateaux who adopted careful selection produced some outstanding wines. Those from the Margaux region were probably the greatest of the decade. St Julien and Pauillac also turned out very good wines. The irregularity means that no single characteristic defines the vintage, however the wines are now at the peak of their maturity.

Champagne: A good year, that was overshadowed by the outstanding 1982 vintage. The winter was harsh, and conditions did not improve much in spring, which was cold and damp. As a result, flowering was late, although when it did take place it did so under ideal conditions. The sunny, warm weather continued throughout much of the summer, although enough rain fell to prevent the crop from drying out. Rain, and the temperature, fell at the start of September, but conditions picked up in time for the harvest at the end of the month and beginning of October.

Portugal: 1983 vintage ports are now considered great classic, concentrated, rich and potent wines. It was a general declaration of vintage, with 10 major shippers declaring this year. In youth the wines were powerful yet austere, lacking the showy opulence of the 85s. However, in bottle they have developed marvellously, with the best examples being complex and harmonious. These are excellent value-for-money ports, and would make a brilliant 40 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: The final episode of the TV series M*A*S*H, entitled Goodbye, Farewell and Amen, airs on CBS, to a total audience of 121.6 million.
Eurovision Winner: Luxembourg with the song " Si La Vie Est Cadeau" by Corinne Hermes
Born in this Year: Henry Cavill, Actor, Popular actor best known for his role as Superman in several of the DC films, including Man of Steel and Justice League. Other film credits include The Count of Monte Cristo, Immortals, and Stardust. For television, he was cast as Charles Brandon on Showtime's The Tudors and Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's fantasy drama The Witcher.

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1983

New

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

This is a very fine 1983: Far superior on the nose to the 1988. Damson, mulberry and a touch of earth. Fine definition. Perhaps even a little mint leaf. The palate is well-defined with rounded, plummy damson fruit. Not complex but there is a vigour and charm here. Fresh acidity. Becomes quite minerally in the finish. Drinking superbly now.

"This has a light nose, mulberry, a touch of wild mushroom, sloe and a touch of caramel. Moderate definition. Palate is medium-bodied, quite rustic tannins, mulberry, touch of leather, the acidity a little sharp and attacking. Course, peppery finish." Neil Martin Wine Journal tasted 2009.

Chateau Rieussec, 1983

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
Sweet White Wine

The 1983 Chateau Rieussec and one of many decent wines produced in Bordeaux in this year. Colour rusty, deep gold. A beguiling bouquet of apricot, honey, molasses, old English Christmas cake, toffee and smoke. A beautiful texture in the mouth, weighty, viscous and satiny. Very rich, toffee, honey, treacle and poached pears and apricots. Very ripe but with sufficient acidity to hold it all together. Complex and multi-layered.

Château Rieussec is a prestigious Bordeaux wine estate located in the Sauternes appellation, within the Bordeaux wine region of France. The estate is well-known for producing sweet white wines, specifically Sauternes, which are crafted from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot.

Churchill's Port, 1983

Quinta do Agua Alta

Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham.

Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port.

Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner.

Tokaji, 1983

New

Tokaji Royal Aszu Essencia (Half litre, 50cl), Hungary

Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat grape varieties that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars.

Calem Port, 1983

Vintage Port

The Calem Vinatge Port from the excellent 1983 vintage has flavours of redcurrant, violet and leather perfume, an intense complex and developing flavour profile with an exceptionally long finish.

Reviews
"This has a dense, glossy and youthful appearance - very impressive for the age of this wine. Accordingly the nose is dominated by a core of round, sweet, accessible fruit. What a lovely palate! Powerful yet elegant, with a fine balance and fluidity. There's still quite a thick seam of powerful tannin running through the wine, particularly on the finish. And it has incredible length - this is great wine.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1983

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
Individual Yquem Wooden Case

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

*** 96 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews
"The 1983 ranks among the most concentrated wines from this property over the last 25 years, with a staggering display of extract and a mind-boggling amount of glycerin. The vintage commenced early for d'Yquem, beginning on September 29th and finishing on November 18th. The 1983 is enormous, with huge, honeyed, pineapple, coconut, and caramel flavors, massive extract, and an unctuous quality barely framed by acidity and new oak. The wine has changed little since bottling.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1983

Pessac-Leognan First Growth Classification

"A very earthy, melted asphalt, creosote-like nose intermixed with compost, decaying autumnal vegetation, and herb-tinged fruit is actually more appealing than it might sound. In the mouth the wine is fleshy, medium-bodied, relatively lush, but the garnet colour is showing considerable amber. Drink up." Robert Parker, 2003

Château Haut-Brion 1983 is a fully mature Left Bank Bordeaux from the stellar Haut-Brion First Growth. Located in Pessac-Léognan, Haut-Brion has the distinction of being the only property outside Médoc to be designated Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification.

Fonseca Port, 1983

Fonseca is one of our all-time favourites. Fonseca's 1983-vintage Port is made with a harvest that survived the first snowfall in Pinhão in 20 years and heavy rain through the spring. Consider pairing its chocolate, fig, prune, raisin and walnut flavours with a cheeseboard or with festive fare over the Christmas period.

A rare example of the 1983 from Rebello Valente. This port has a light centre, pale rim, weak / watery looking orange rim. Chocolate and cocoa powder on the nose. Sweet and full bodied entry but with an earthy mid-palate.

Robertson Bros were the shippers behind this brand, which was one of the most reputable. Rebello Valente was acquired by Seagram in the early 1970's but very little vintage Port was produced after this point.

St. Magdalener, 1983

Kettmeir

St. Magdalena is an area covering the lower, south-facing slopes above Bozen-Bolzano. The “Kienaster” vineyard where this particular wine comes from is situated near the village of St. Pauls. It is made from the Vernatsch-Schiava grape and a very small proportion of Lagrein. The extremely favourable climatic conditions combined with very steep vineyards result in a dark ruby wine, finely scented, soft and velvety on the palate.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1983

Vintage Port

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***

Light red colour with just a touch of purple showing through. Warre has drier firm style, less show more workman-like but with elegance and what the Symingtons call “florals”. The style at 25 years is charming. It’s above all harmonious with a dried fruit and almonds undercurrent mixed with a pinch of cocoa and tea leaf. It has fine acidity and length with just the right bite in the back end.
