1994 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian:

Visit our 1994 Wine and Port Offer Page

In Tuscany, the Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile and Brunello had a very good year with a warm early Spring. The good weather conditions carried through to the harvest season with healthy, ripe fruit. In Piedmont prolonged rain caused serious problems, however a few producers still made good Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

Bordeaux: The 1994 vintage is generally rated as good but a little inconsistent. The top estates produced some very fine wines that are far superior to those in the poor years between 1991 and 1993. The best 1994 Bordeaux wines are characterised by high tannin levels with rich fruit and should mature well over the next few years.

Portugal: A 1994 Vintage Port makes a great 30 year old wine gift for a 30th birthday or anniversary: 1994 was one of the great vintages of the 20th Century that produced classic, monumental port wines with rich fruit character. While these wines can be approached in their youth, the best need 20 years in bottle, making them mature for drinking now or perfect to age for another 20 years. Our wine buyer highly recommends the 1994 Taylor's Vintage Port , an outstanding Vintage Port that scored an incredible 100 points from Wine Spectator and 97 from Robert Parker.

Spain: This was the ‘Aaah!’ vintage; after three years of drought and indifferent quality, nature relented and provided one of the best vintages of the century (compared by many producers with the legendary 1964). The grapes showed tremendous ripeness, colour and extract. This was a truly great vintage in the making, although (or perhaps because) it was relatively low in quantity.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: BBC One broadcasts the first episode of sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, created by Richard Curtis for Dawn French, who plays the title role & Amazon was founded.
Eurovision Winner: Ireland with the song "Rock n Roll Kids" by Paul Harrington & Charlie McGettigan
Born in this Year: Tom Daley, Diver, is a British diver and television personality. Specialising in multiple events, he is an Olympic gold medallist in the men's synchronised 10-metre platform event at the 2020 Olympics and double world champion in the FINA 10-metre platform event, winning in 2009 at the age of fifteen, and again in 2017. He is an Olympic bronze medallist in the 2012 platform event the 2016 synchronised event, and the 2020 platform event, making him the first British diver to win four Olympic medals. Daley also competes in team events, winning the inaugural mixed team World title in 2015. He is a one-time Olympic champion, 3-time World Champion, a 2-time junior World Champion, a 5-time European champion and 4-time Commonwealth champion. Quevedo, 1994

Colheita Port

Only 300 bottles released by popular demand. The 1994 Quevedo was voted "Port of the Night" during a recent tasting with Oscar and so we persuaded him to release a small quantity.

The 1994 Quevedo Colheita is an outstanding quality and value effort from this family-run estate. Oscar and Claudia Quevedo have produced a light brown port with hints of amber. On the palate there are nuts and a lovely light molasses note with coffee and spices The finish is long and lingering as befits a quality port such as this. Outstanding!

Tasting Notes:
The NV 30 Year Old Tawny Porto was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork and 114 grams of sugar. Another complex, crisp tawny, this adds power and depth to the 20 this issue, but it is mostly along the same lines. Showing exceptional length on the finish, this lingers beautifully. This is impressive on many fronts, if you appreciate complexity more July 2019 (Mark Squires)

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1994

Sale

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle
Includes gift box
Special Offer | Was £99 | Now £79.95

The 1994 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

In the 1960's his nephew Giovanni came to lend a hand and was instrumental in shaping the winery and its future development. Up to 2009, Giovanni's son Alessandro looked after the beautiful vineyards situated in the long hills surrounding Piemonte. In recent years, due to Alessandro's passing, the winery ceased production.

30 Year Old Offley

Tawny Port (Comes in Green Gift Tube as illustrated)

Tasting notes
Amber in colour, with appealing greenish hints. Its bouquet is very intense and complex, with notes of caramel, mocha, nuts and tobacco leaf. This is a very well-balanced and unctuous wine that shows a delicate structure and sublime finish.

Production method
Hand-picked grapes undergo stalk-removal and crushing before fermentation, under controlled temperature, with skin maceration. The addition of wine alcohol at the ideal moment sets the balance between the wine's body and bouquet. Ageing in wooden casks in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, the final blend results from a selection of wines between 25 and 40 years.

Bairrada, 1994

Quinta Poço do Lobo - Cabernet Sauvignon

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Vivino review:
It has a dense, even, opaque crimson colour, with a very rich, dark well of black fruit and floral aromas, with all sorts of mineral and delicately spicy nuances. Chateau Latour a Pomerol, 1994

Pomerol
91 Points Wine Spectator

The 1994 Latour a Pomerol is a wine to be aged., it can nevertheless be enjoyed fairly young. A magnificent wine that combines richness, concentration and elegance.

Comprising two plots with different distinctive locations and soil types, Latour à Pomerol is one of the best wines in the appellation in great vintages such as 1947, 1961 or 1970. The 1961 received Robert Parker's ultimate score of 100/100. Its finesse and rich substance is not unlike the best wines of Pomerol.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1994

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

The 1994 Chateau Lynch-Bages reveals a lovely perfumed nose of red fruit, cassis, cedar and graphite. On the palate, the fruit is round and ripe with a long balanced finish. A great wine in its own right and a pleasure to drink now.

If any château in all of the classified growths consistently outperforms its original status, it is Lynch Bages. Indeed, this château has long been prized by Pauillac lovers who seek good value, yet well made wine. The property is situated just outside the quiet village of Pauillac north of Latour and Pichon Lalande. It is run by the very capable and amiable Jean-Charles Cazes who took over from his father Jean-Michel Cazes in 2006.

Chateau Palmer, 1994

Margaux 3me Cru Classe

Palmer's 1994 is a successful wine for the vintage. The large Merlot component gives the wine a silky texture, and an up-front, sweet, black-cherry and plum-scented nose with toasty oak and floral scents. Medium-bodied, round, and nicely concentrated, this charming, elegant wine is well-proportioned and harmonious. Neither acidity, tannin, nor alcohol stand out in this well-balanced 1994.
