2000 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: 2000 was one of the finest post-war vintages for Piedmont wines. The wines are still tannic and youthful, and will last for many years to come.

Bordeaux: The fabled millennium vintage produced wines that are of true greatness and longevity. They are characterised as being powerful and concentrated, with high tannins. The quality is due to ideal weather from the end of September; this allowed the grapes to develop thick skins from lack of moisture. For the first time in many years there was little rain in the harvest season allowing the skins to thicken further. This served to further concentrate the wines. These have evolved slowly and will continue to do so for decades to come, making them an excellent idea for a 23 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary whether to drink now or keep for future drinking.

Portugal:

2000-wine-gifts
The 2000 Vintage was the first to be declared in the 21st century and will be remembered for the immense concentration of its wines and for the small quantities produced. The wines show tremendous promise, with intense berry fruit aromas and full-bodied structure. They should remain at their peak between now and 2040 at the very least, if kept well.

This Year in History:
Fun Fact: Millennium celebrations take place throughout the UK. The Millennium Dome in London is officially opened by HM The Queen.

Carruades de Chateau Lafite, 2000

Pauillac, Bordeaux
***90 Points- Robert Parker***

Robert Parker writes of this wine "A brilliant second wine, the 2000 Carruades de Lafite (51.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42.3% Merlot, 4.9% Cabernet Franc, and 1.4% Petit Verdot), aged in 10-15% new French oak, shows wonderfully sweet lead pencil shavings intermixed with an elegant black cherry and cassis nose. A wine of tremendous purity, medium body, and the tell-tale Lafite elegance, this is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years." 2003 90 points

Chateau Cissac, 2000

Haut Medoc

Good colour, great legs and nose. Quite nice when opened. Perhaps a trace of liquorice and a hint of 'medicinal' character but these initial characteristics soon faded. After 3-4 hours - quite rich and aromatic with good cherry fruit and a touch of maraschino at the end. Tannins have integrated completely. Excellent with roast sirloin. Cellar Tracker Review

Chateau d'Issan, 2000

Cantenac Margaux 3rd Growth Classification, Bordeaux

An outstanding wine, scoring 93 pts, from a superb vintage. Robert Parker, renowned wine critic writes of this wine....."A suave, aristocratic, classic built on delicacy and finesse as opposed to power and blockbuster fruit, the 2000 requires introspection, but what one finds is extremely rewarding. This graceful, symmetrical, refined effort displays a dark ruby/purple colour in addition to a sweet perfume of white flowers intermixed with black currants, liquorice, and subtle new oak. Medium-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin, and a dense finish that builds gradually and persistently, it appears to be the finest d'Issan produced in over four decades.

Chateau Durfort Vivens, 2000

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux

From the outstanding 2000 vintage, the Durfort Vivens has a wonderful bouquet on opening. It needs some time in the decanter to find its balance. Lovely fruit and depth of flavour with a good long finish. Still has a tannic backbone and has a long life ahead of it.

Chateau d'Yquem, 2000

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

Only 25,000 bottles of Yquem were made in this very tough Sauternes vintage. A truly valiant effort from this fine property.

"The millennial 2000 Chateau d’Yquem is a valiant effort in one of the most challenging Sauternes vintages in recent memory. The 2000 is quite deep in colour. The nose is crisp and well-defined but not the most complex, as you would expect from a truly challenging growing season in Sauternes. It is pleasant in its own way with delicate scents of tangerine, yellow flowers and Mirabelle. The palate is well-balanced with marmalade tinged opening. I like the acidity here, an Yquem with good race, although it does feel a little tapered toward the finish.

Chateau Gloria, 2000

St Julien, Bordeaux

The 2000 Chateau Gloria is generous and well-structured, these intense, complex wines are typical of the Saint Julien appellation. The result of traditional vinification, they have a strong, rich colour. On the palate, they are expressive, rounded and supple. They should be kept for a few years to express their full potential.

Château Gloria's plots were acquired by Henri Martin, mayor of Saint-Julien Beychevelle during the 20th century. This unavoidable figure of the Médoc (one of the founding members of the Commanderie du Bontemps) has raised this vintage to the level of excellent classified growths of the appellation.

Chateau Grand Pontet, 2000

St Emilion, Bordeaux
** 92 Points - Robert Parker **

Tasting Note for the 2000 Chateau Grand Pontet: A blend of 75 Merlot, 15 Cabernet Franc, and 10 Cabernet Sauvignon produced from modest yields of 30 hectolitres per hectare, this opaque purple-coloured, fat, ripe, exotic, flamboyant effort (coffee, plums, vanilla, and sweet black cherries galore) is a St.-Emilion fruit-bomb made in a modern style. With loads of character, glycerin, fruit, and concentration, this full-bodied, "stacked and packed" wine will be adored by consumers! Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 146, April 2003.

Chateau Grandes Murailles, 2000

St Emilion, Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux

A nice, mature, midweight St Emilion. Shows a floral nose with black cherry fruit, whilst on the palate there is more blackcurrant with a touch of leather. Cedar & cigar box get more intense with time, with some forest floor notes. Holds up well.

Chateau Les Grandes Murailles is produced from a small 1.46-hectare vineyard located on the Saint Emilion plateau not far from Clos Fourtet, just outside the village. Chateau Les Grandes Murailles had been managed by Sophie Fourcade. Fourcade gave up her promising career as a successful attorney to make Bordeaux wine at the family’s multiple properties.

** 92 Points - Wine Spectator **

Chateauneuf du Pape, 2000

Domaine Vieux Telegraphe, Rhone

The 2000 Vieux Telegraphe Rouge invariably has a beautiful colour, an earthy nose, but one of freshness, lively and promising. One finds freshness in the mouth, nervy and lightly mentholated. At the same time, it is suave and rich on the finish. The tannins are supple and ripe with no dryness. The end of the tasting is very clean and woody, rich with a light liquorice taste.

With its structure and complexity this red wine will go well with game, lamb or risotto with wild mushrooms cooked in a red wine sauce.

Dow's, 2000

Vintage Port, Douro

**94 Points** Robert Parker
"An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050." Robert Parker

Niepoort Port, 2000

Secundum Vintage Port, Douro

Dirk Niepoort has created this second style of vintage port called “Secundum Vintage”. The Secundum’s intention is to provide an approachable Vintage that offers immediate satisfaction yet is well-balanced enough to age for decades. So it is not a second wine, but instead an alternative, slightly more affordable bottling for Niepoort fans who can’t afford or obtain the regular Vintage Port. It’s a proper Vintage Port, but from wines considered not classic enough to be a Vintage Niepoort. The 2000 vintage has a slightly sweet herbal edge to the nose. Rich, full flavoured palate shows sweet fruit with a chunky, spicy edge.
