2001 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: The 2001 Italian vintage caps off a remarkable string of outstanding vintages for Piedmont that began in 1996. During that relatively brief time period producers gained a great deal of knowledge and experience, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, a positive trend which continues today. In addition, 2001 featured the growing conditions in which Nebbiolo thrives: hot daytime temperatures alternating with cool nights. The favourable weather, along with producers' newfound sense of maturity, combined to produce an extraordinary set of wines. Simply put, for Barolo, 2001 is the most complete of the vintages between 1996 and 2001. These would make an excellent 22 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year, and will keep well for years to come.

Bordeaux: The 2001 vintage is characterised by wines that are in a classic style, with high tannic qualities and with fresh acidity and medium body. The weather throughout the growing season was cool and cloudy. A mostly dry September and October allowed the late harvest of a large crop. The wines will be relatively slow to evolve given the relatively good acid and tannin levels.

Portugal:

2001-wine-gifts
The 2001 Port Vintage was a good one, yielding dark and well structured wines. While not generally declared, coming directly after the 2000 vintage, this was an excellent one nevertheless. Some outstanding Single Quinta wines were produced.

One of the wettest winters on record was followed by a moderately hot summer with light winds, which helped prevent disease. Harvest started at Quinta de Vargellas on September 17th and on the 20th in the Pinhao Valley, so rain on the 29th and again on the 5th of October affected only the tail end of the vintage. All in all, yields were up almost 30% over the preceding year.

David Guimaraens, Head Winemaker at Taylor's, Fonseca and Croft and the sixth generation of his family to make wines for Fonseca, wrote: “This year is certainly distinguished by being a year of larger production with a consistently high overall quality, as has not been seen since 1995.”

Rhone: The 2001 Rhone valley vintage produced powerful, juicy wines with concentrated, ripe fruit and silky tannins. The vintage was marked by a dry summer which concentrated sugar levels and a cooler September which, due to the northerly winds, contributed very good acidity levels alongside ripe tannins. 2001 may be more complete than the 1998s, making it the best vintage here for a dozen years.

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 2001

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle
Includes original cardboard gift box

The 2001 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Bolgheri, 2001

Superiore, Tenuta Guado al Tasso Antinori
** 96 Points -Parker's Wine Advocate **

Tenuta Belvedere is the Antinori property in Bolgheri, once part of an enormous estate from which the vineyards of both Ornellaia and Sassicaia were carved out. After an excellent 1998, the wines of both 1999 and, particularly, 2000 were significantly less successful, but the 2001 Guado al Tasso should help forget this temporary unevenness. A dense ruby with purple highlights, the wine is loaded with aromas and flavors of perfectly ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, minerals, sage, and thyme. The wine is more fragrant and more finely-spun than Antinori’s other Bordeaux wine, Solaia, but there is no lack of concentration and density here, though both are tempered by a satiny texture and polished tannins which are all elegance and breed.

Chateau Talbot, 2001

St Julien, 4me Cru Classe

** 90 Points Neil Martin **

Reviews
"This may be the largest vineyard in the Medoc, with nearly 300 acres under vine. There was a period in the nineties where Talbot seemed to be a bit off form, but quality over recent vintages has displayed considerable promise. This estate is capable of producing very special wines, as anyone who has tasted their 1986 or 1982 can easily attest. The 2001, which represents only 50% of the production, is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A dense saturated ruby/purple color is followed by notes of smoked herbs, licorice, cedar, incense, plums, and black currants.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 2001

Sandrone Luciano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Montepulciano, 2001

d'Abruzzo, Miglianico

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2001

Vintage Port
Presented in Luxurious Quinta Do Noval gift Box
99 Points - Wine Spectator
98 Points - Wine Enthusiast
98/100 - Tom Cannavan

The 2001 Vintage Port Nacional is a late release, declared in 2003. Christian Seely, Owner of Quinta do Noval said that "The 2001 was extremely backward and quite closed up, dense and very tannic. Since we had just declared and released the 2000 Nacional, we decided to lay down the 250 cases of Nacional 2001. The late release has certainly tamed this. It still feels very firm and has a real backbone, but it is not overly drying and it is a lot more approachable than newly-released Nacionals can be.

Q. Do Noval Director Christian Seeley :
“Although we declared Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 officially in 2003, we did not release the wine for sale at the time.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2001

Vintage Port

The 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio is a very dark ruby colour. The Touriga Nacional’s tiny yields brought great concentration to the wine, while the Touriga Franca, due to the good weather during the harvest, achieved perfect ripening, creating wines of great elegance. The Tinta Barroca was very ripe at the time of picking, with a higher than average baumé, producing wines of excellent structure and ageing potential. The old plantings of Tinta Roriz had lower than normal yields in 2001, giving wines with a typical concentration of berry fruit aromas.

Taylor's Port, 2001

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

*** 17.5+/20 Wine Doctor ***
*** Decanter magazine: Silver (2001 vintage) ***

A delicious, single estate vintage port showing a deep purple colour and aromas of violets. Good conditions in 2001 led to a marvellously rich and ripe harvest. The palate is big and broad with black fruit flavours, hints of liquorice and stewed fruits. The finish is rich and long. A delicious wine with hard cheeses.

"There was a time when Taylor's release of Vargellas offered a chance to snap up a good value, maturing Port bargain; but in the last few years we seem to have skipped very quickly from the 1988 to the 1998 and now to the 2001 vintages.
