2009 Wine and Port Vintage
Italian: Hot conditions have created ripe reds with fairly high alcohol and good quality, which are relatively fast-maturing.
Bordeaux: This was a very good year for wines from all Bordeaux appellations. Tannic, powerful, structured and rich, the best wines need 15-20 or more years to develop. Margaux, Pauillac, Pessac Leognan and St. Emilion are the best regions, however Sauternes was also successful.
Champagne: After early complications a superb summer produced a clean crop of high quality, with particularly good Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims. Wines from this vintage are plump and approachable.
Portugal:
Ports from 2009 make an excellent 14 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. The 2009 Port was declared as a vintage by the Taylor Fladgate Partnership covering Taylor, Fonseca and Croft - it will be remembered as a year of low yields, which produced wines of massive density and scale. This was partly the result of a small amount of fruit produced across all grape varieties, as well as the very dry summer during which there was no rainfall from July through to harvest time in September.
Spain: Very hot conditions gave average temperatures above the infamous 2003 vintage. However, timely rains in Rioja and Ribera del Duero relieved the vines and rescued the vintage, to create one of very good quality.
This Year in History: Fun Fact: US Airways Flight 1549 landed on the Hudson River, NYC.After colliding with a pack of Canada geese, the aircraft lost all engine power. Pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles decided to make an emergency crash landing in the Hudson River. Everyone on board survived.

Colheita Port, Douro
The Messias colheita port from the outstanding 2009 vintage has been aged in a barrel until recent bottling. The extensive barrel ageing has given this wine a tawny colour with an expressive nose of wild dried fruit aromas where blackberry stands out. On the palate, caramel nuances complement the dried fruit leading to a sweet vanilla touch. It finishes long with a persistent and fine aftertaste.
Pair this luscious sweet port with almond tarts or caramel and chocolate based desserts. Crème brûlée is a classic combination as is Stilton cheese. Hard cheeses such as cheddar pair well too. …

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.
The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.
It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. Reviews:Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark. Tasted May 2011.
