1956 Vintage Report

Italian: While the rest of Europe suffered poor weather, Italy produced a good vintage. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines. The 1956 wines are fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Bordeaux: One of the worst vintages on record - avoid!

Barolo, 1956

Mirafiore (Special Offer was £245 now £145

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will balance out full-flavoured, rich foods beautifully.

Baron de Sigognac, 1956

Armagnac (Comes in original wooden box as illustrated)

Baron de Sigognac 1956 Vintage Armagnac has a beautiful amber colour with gold highlights. There is a delicate nose with an impressive wealth of aromas, where the light scents of pink grapefruit and apricot meet the clear aromas of dried fruits and cinnamon. A true olfactory pleasure. Mouth is as wonderful as nose, and delicately develops a marriage of crystallized citrus fruits and roasted coffee aromas, before merging in a beautiful and long finish of vanilla rancio.

Chateau Yquem, 1956

Sauternes Premiere Grand Cru Classe

Considered as the greatest white wine in the world, Château d'Yquem, located on a small hill, enjoys a microclimate and an exceptional terroir. The vineyard, which has no fewer than 150 parcels of different soil, is cherished throughout the year, each vine receives an average of 50 treatments per year. The selection is particularly rigorous for the grand vin of château d'Yquem: it is often said that a vine produces only one glass of wine . The harvest is carried out through at least four passes (seven in 1997!) to harvest the grapes at perfect ripeness, with the noble rot.

Madeira, 1956

Sercial - Bottled by Barbeito

This is a rare and very limited release of the 1956 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition.

There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1956 Sercial is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira.

There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.
