Taylor's Vintage Port

Taylor, Fladgate, & Yeatman (often simply Taylor Fladgate) is one of the largest port wine houses. Founded in 1692 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, it is also one of the oldest. The house invented the style of late-bottled vintage port. Taylor Fladgate's vintage ports are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world.

In addition to Vintage Port, Taylor's has also enjoyed considerable success with its Quinta de Vargellas, under which label Vintage wine is made in good years that have not been declared. The range has been developed with Quinta de Terra Feita in the Pinhão valley and Quinta do Junco, Vila Nova da Gaia and Xisto.

The Port wines are typically closed and austere when young; it is only with adequate ageing that they loosen up and offer their subliminal qualities.

Taylor's Vintage Port, 2009

VINTAGE PORT (special offer. Was £59.95 now £54.95)

95 Points - Wine Journal

Reviews:Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark. Tasted May 2011.
Score: 95 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, June 2011

Jancis Robinson:
Blackish purple.

Taylor's Vintage Port, 2005

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

92 Points - Neil Martin

From The excellent 2005 vintage, this wine is an inky black colour with a narrow purple rim. The nose is built on a sturdy foundation of rich and potent blackcurrant, cherry and blackberry aromas interlaced with notes of apricot and plum. Hints of cedar wood, gumcistus and violet provide the exotic scented dimension which is the hallmark of Vargellas followed Vintage Ports. On the palate the first impression is supple and restrained but the finish reveals a tightly knit fabric of sinewy tannin and unleashes a powerful surge of rich black fruit flavour.

Reviews "A deep black/opaque hue.

Taylor's Vintage Port, 2004

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port (Special Offer, was £39.95 now £34.95)

Powerful, pungent, aromatic nose with ripe, rich, juicy, berry fruit aromas; overlaid with wonderful characteristic floral notes. This wine has a bouquet with great depth and layers of intense fresh fruit. On the palate, the freshness of berry fruit continues, combining with rich chocolate and liquorice flavours of equal intensity. The tannins are firm but well integrated, resulting in a beautifully structured and balanced wine. Texturally the wine is smooth and silky, leaving one with the sensation of a well crafted, stylish, extremely elegant wine.

Taylor's Vintage Port, 2001

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

*** 17.5+/20 Wine Doctor ***
*** Decanter magazine: Silver (2001 vintage) ***

A delicious, single estate vintage port showing a deep purple colour and aromas of violets. Good conditions in 2001 led to a marvellously rich and ripe harvest. The palate is big and broad with black fruit flavours, hints of liquorice and stewed fruits. The finish is rich and long. A delicious wine with hard cheeses.

"There was a time when Taylor's release of Vargellas offered a chance to snap up a good value, maturing Port bargain; but in the last few years we seem to have skipped very quickly from the 1988 to the 1998 and now to the 2001 vintages.

Taylor's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port

Reviews:
100 Points – Wine Spectator
"In a word, superb. It's full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there's amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever, it's better than either the '92 or the '70, though it's very like the '70 in structure."

This classically made, opaque purple-coloured wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length.

Taylor's Vintage Port, 1992

Vintage Port

*** 100 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews:
"Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, displaying layer upon layer of concentrated black fruits backed by well-integrated tannin and structure.
