Cask 33 Limited Edition Old Tawny Port

Sandeman’s Cask 33 is a single cask of Tawny Porto that is being launched to coincide with the celebration of Sandeman’s 225 years in 2015. The port includes wines of up to 70 years old that have been created by different generations of Sandeman master benders.

This release is a limited edition of only 685 bottles. The bottle design reproduces the style of those bottles originally used at the time of the founder in 1790 and are hand blown by one of Portugal’s last great artisanal bottle works.


Each year the winemaking team taste all the wines on the aging inventory, and when necessary, make adjustments in keeping with the house style. …

The 2020 Altano Douro wine is full bodied but soft textured, this Dourored is incredibly moreish, full of rich red fruits and spices. Grapes are sourced from the Symington family’s own Dour Valley vineyards.

Altano is a blend of Tinta Roriz that provides the rich berry fruit and Touriga Franca that adds a lifted floral character, the majority of the blend was aged in American and French oak casks to soften up the muscular tannin of the Douro grapes so the wine is ready for immediate drinking. Sourced from the winery's quintas at Vale d’Agodinho and Trovisca, this is dry, light and lifted. It's not the richest and deepest of the LBVs I've seen from this producer, but its focus and the length on the finish are superb. Very expressive as well, this shows brilliantly just now. It can also age and develop if you want to hold it.

Reviews:Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark. Tasted May 2011.
