Prats and Symington, 2019

Chryseia

The 2019 Chryseia has received much critical acclaim as it is the first non-fortified Portuguese red to appear in Wine Spectator's annual Top 100 Wines. Chryseia has been one of the pioneers of the now widely-recognised resurgence of non-fortified DOURO DOC wines. However, this wine, whose name means "golden" in ancient Greek – as does the name of the river in Portuguese – has remained true to its own style. Elegance and balance predominate and it has depth without heaviness, and body without sharpness.

Quinta do Noval, 2019

Vinhas Da Marka, Terroir Series
In Individual Case
***18,5 pts Vinho Grandes Escolhas ***

A few years ago, Quinta do Noval concluded an agreement with the Agrellos family for the long-term lease of the Quinta da Marka vineyard, which we had identified as having terroir of exceptional potential for the production of quality wines.

This potential was revealed by the excellent red wines that were produced at Quinta da Marka in the 2019 harvest. These were so remarkable that Noval decided to launch a very limited volume of Vinhas da Marka 2019 from a plot of old vines with 1.45 hectares at the heart of Marka.
These old vines planted in the 1930's are a blend of over 30 different traditional grape varieties.

Quinta do Noval, 2019

Vintage Port, Douro
***97 Points Mark Squires Wine advocate***

"A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz, foot-trodden in time honoured fashion in granite lagares: deep opaque inky black hue; tight knit and unyielding with underlying minty ripeness on the nose; well-defined minty fruit with great purity and intensity on the palate, dark chocolate depth at the core, firm but ripe linear tannins with, long lovely freshness (the hallmark of this vintage) present on the finish. 2,780 cases representing 14% of the estate’s total production". 18.5 Richard Mayson

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2019

Vintage Port, Douro

The 2019 Quinta Vintage Ports are the result of an erratic growing season, with a little over 50% of the average winter rainfall in the Douro and almost none in the summer. Fortunately, showers at the end of August helped the grapes achieve more balanced maturations. Head Winemaker, Charles Symington, exercised patience and precisely timed the picking over six weeks – making it one of the longest harvests in recent years. The reward was a collection of perfectly ripe grape varieties in good quantities (averaging 1.27 kg/vine) delivering lively and exuberant wines. This was in contrast to the concentration of the exceptionally small years in 2017 and 2018.

Quinta dos Carvalhais, 2019

Touriga Nacional
Red Wine, Dao, Portugal
***92 Points- Wine Enthusiast***

Quinta dos Carvalhais Tinto Reserva is deep red in colour, with aromas of black fruit and spices lifted by hints of menthol. It is firm and powerful in the mouth with structured, ripe tannins and good acidity.

This 105-hectare property, situated at an altitude of 465-500 metres above sea level, has 50 hectares under vine. Warm days and cool nights at this altitude slow down the grape ripening process and result in wines with lovely depth yet vibrant fruit and a signature freshness. The vineyards are planted on poor granite soils with a predominance of indigenous Dão varieties including Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Encruzado.

Intensely rich, fruity and sweet yet remarkably fresh and vibrant with lemon sherbet, orange marmalade, tropical fruits and butterscotch.

This utterly irresistible dessert wine, with all its Trophies, Golds and Double Golds every vintage, is the pride of Hermann Seifried. He was a grape growing pioneer, who arrived in New Zealand’s South Island from Austria, via Germany and South Africa, in 1969. He met and married Kiwi lass Agnes Wilkins, and they soon realised their shared dream of growing grapes. 1976 was their maiden vintage and, over 40 years on, the Seifrieds are racking up countless awards with the help of the second generation.

Vietti Barolo, 2019

Vietti - Castiglione, Barolo, Piemonte

95/100 - Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
"This is the most accessible Barolo from Vietti and the wine that casts the biggest net in terms of fruit sourcing from across many MGA sites. The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is a layered and generous wine that reflects the main takeaways offered by this very successful vintage. In fact, because this wine is not from a single site, it speaks more to the quality of the vintage than it does to any one specific vineyard. The Castiglione reveals generous richness and concentrated cherry fruit with dark saturation and good structure that comes from the thicker skins developed on Nebbiolo grapes this year.

Vietti Barolo, 2019

Vietti - Brunate
*** 97 Points - Wine Advocate ***

The grapes come from the historic MGA “Brunate” vineyard in the municipality of La Morra, located on the southern slope towards Barolo. Limestone- and clay-rich soil (Marls of Saint Agatha) and an altitude between 300 and 400 m asl. The average age of the Guyot-cultivated vines is 50 years, and there is a density of around 4600 plants per hectare.

Winemaking: Grapes harvested by hand on 7 October 2019. After gentle pressing, the juice fermented for around three weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins. This period included pre- and post-ferment maceration, involving the traditional submerged-cap method.

Vietti Barolo, 2019

Vietti - Cerequio

97/100 Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
"Vietti was able to buy a 9,000-square meter piece of Cerequio from Michele Chiarlo, arguably the king of this celebrated cru. And because this is a new addition to the portfolio, the Vietti team is still learning the ropes. For example, there is a fresh minty tone that pops up from the bouquet of the 2019 Barolo Cerequio. "That minty note was a mystery to us," Luca Currado tells me. "But then we understood that its part of Cerequio." This wine shows a firm grip on the palate that does extend out to include some textural softness, but it ultimately remains quite structured.

Vietti Barolo, 2019

Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo, Piemonte

98/100 Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
"With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is a historic cornerstone wine of this mighty portfolio. It is also one of the Vietti Barolos that consistently delivers extreme quality and pleasure with each new release. Like the other wines presented here, winemaking is straightforward, with submerged cap fermentations lasting 30 to 35 days (although those times were reduced in 2019 because this vintage was not suited to long maceration times). Serralunga d'Alba always delivers power and richness. There are aromas of dried tobacco leaf, perfumed tea, crushed rose and iron ore.

***Silver Medal- IWC 2024***
Special Offer | Was £24.95 | Now £17.95

A 2018 Late Bottled Vintage Port Wine from Quevedo.

The 2018 Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) is a traditionally styled (lightly filtered but not cold stabilized) blend of Touriga Franca (35%), Touriga Nacional (15%), Tinta Roriz (20%), Tinta Barroca (22%) and Tinto Cão filling out the blend. It was bottled in May 2023 with a long cork and 84 grams of residual sugar after aging for three years in large French vats. Expressive and fruit-forward in its its dry fashion, this adds some structure, but the tannins are never too hard. It is easy to drink now. The depth is average and the power is controlled, although there is some bite on the finish.
