The 1994 Offley Vintage Port has a beautiful light brick color. The nose is warm, intense and pervasive, with a lot of roasted almonds, black cherry and dark chocolate. There is quite a bit of alcohol upfront, reminding of an Amaretto. Full bodied with a smooth and creamy texture and the same layers of flavors on the palate. The chocolate lingers for minutes.

Vintage Port

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. Mature and drinking well now at 22 years of age, still vigorous and with gentle tertiary development in the form of some nutty warmth, ever so slightly stalky on the nose. Core of black cherries and dark chocolate on the palate, medium weight and intensity, light tannins, no excessive alcoholic heat, good length. A solid performance.

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro.
