Description

Lombardy (Lombardia in Italian) may not be the first Italian wine region you think of–Tuscany and Piedmont are usually the top two. But this triangular-shaped region in the north-center of Italy has more going for it than Milan, one of the planet's greatest fashion capitals with five DOCG and 22 DOC wine appellations. Among them is Franciacorta, whose quality sparkling wines made in the traditional method can rival Champagne. In the north, is the Valtellina area, so close to Switzerland you could ski at St. Moritz and take a worthwhile day-trip to this picturesque region of steep, mountainside vineyards held aloft by stone-walled terraces. Don't miss Valtellina's version of Nebbiolo or a dry Amarone-style wine called Sforzato, made from dried Nebbiolo grapes. As a bonus, tucked into the southwest corner is Oltrepò Pavese, one of the largest appellations in Lombardy where you'll find non-traditional wines that rarely make it to export markets.
