Description

Canon La Gaffeliere’s is an outstanding 1999 vintage Bordeaux wine. Robert Parker – 92
The opaque purple-colored 1999 is a strong effort for this vintage. It displays a sweet nose of pain grille, smoke, meats, graphite, blackberry, and cassis liqueur. The wine is full-bodied, deep, powerful, and rich, with sweet tannin and low acidity. This is a blockbuster effort for a delicate vintage such as 1999. [30/04/2002]

Vinous – 90
Good medium ruby. Aromas of plum, currant, game and leather. Silky-sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely vinosity to frame the expressive flavors of roasted plum, currant, black cherry, minerals and dark chocolate. Firmly structured but quite suave, with fine tannins and very good length. Impressive for the vintage. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2002]

Château Canon-La-Gaffelière now sits proudly as a Saint Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) estate only just below the four Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) properties today (Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angélus and Pavie).

Currently, Stephan von Neipperg manages Canon-La-Gaffelière as well as several other Saint Émilion estates owned by the family. Château Ausone is visible from certain points on the property. The vineyards are farmed using 100% organic methods. The small 19.5ha vineyard is planted with 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The old vines average close to 50 years of age. They also have much older vines which are close to 80 years old.
