Description

Olivier Bernard has transformed Domaine de Chevalier during his tenure. In the early days, an ambitious re-planting program was undertaken, which took many years before the fruits of his labours could be enjoyed. Now the estate is in superb health and it seems that Olivier can turn out a great red and white, vintage after vintage. The 2015 is gorgeous; a profound yet reserved Domaine de Chevalier that reveals itself slowly. Initially it is understated with notes of smoky cassis. As it opens up, it displays damsons and raspberry liqueur fruit. It is subtle wine of charm and sophistication with a latent power that will help it to age gracefully for decades. Produced from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and cropped at 35 hl/ha.

Château Domaine de Chevalier stands as an iconic wine estate located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation within Bordeaux, France. With origins dating back to the 17th century, the estate boasts a rich history of winemaking excellence. Its 45 hectares of vineyards benefit from a diverse terroir of gravel, clay, and limestone soils, ideally suited for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot for red wines, as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for whites. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the Graves Classification of 1953, and for both red and white wines in the 1959 Classification of Graves, Domaine de Chevalier consistently produces wines of exceptional quality and finesse. The red wines are known for their depth, complexity, and aging potential, while the white wines exhibit elegance, freshness, and a vibrant minerality. Under the stewardship of the Bernard family since 1983, the estate remains committed to sustainable viticulture and meticulous winemaking practices, ensuring that each bottle reflects the essence of its prestigious terroir and heritage.

Tasted blind. Neat and luscious and sweet. Very slightly tarty. But it beguiles. Much richer than most previous vintages.

The 2015 Domaine de Chevalier is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. It went through malolactic and aging on its lees during three months in 35% new, 35% one-year-old and 30% two-year-old barrels, with a total aging of 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it has lovely spiciness on the nose—Chinese five spice and black pepper—with a core of red and black cherries and smoked meats. Medium-bodied, finely crafted and refreshing, it's quite minerally in the mouth and persistent on the finish.
