Description

The 2018 is a very complex, terroir driven red wine made from old vines from this iconic Quinta. The wine comprises of a beautiful deep ruby colour and aromas of blackberry, black cherry as well as red cranberry fruit harmoniously integrated with creamy vanilla notes and earthy spiciness, demonstrating notable aromatic intensity and complexity. Full bodied, very balanced and round with high acidity and sticky tannins, resulting in a very pleasant and long-lasting finish. A wonderful expression of the land this wine comes from. Originating from selected parcels of centenary vines at Quinta das Carvalhas, the Carvalhas Vinhas Velhas is the very best that can be made at Real Companhia Velha. The result, is a superb Douro red, which not only expresses the singularity of this estate and its north facing vineyards, but also reflects on Douro’s history, due to the vast diversity of varieties present in the parcels of old vines. The Carvalhas extracts from these vines the power and concentration and from its sun exposure the freshness and balance. A wine that will certainly offer great character after ageing few decades in bottle.

Serve at 16°C. Enjoy with meats, smoked meats, pasta, hearty meat dishes such as beef stroganoff or shepherd’s pie, Asian-inspired foods, cold cuts and cheese.

The 2018 Vinhas Velhas da Quinta das Carvalhas is a field blend from the winery's old vines (around 100 years) aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak. It comes in at 14.46% alcohol. Suave but ripe and deep, this balanced Vinhas Velhas is a Big Boy that nonetheless easily holds itself together and winds up seeming rather elegant. The first thing you'll notice here is not the big fruit, but the power. There is a real tannic backbone, meaning this is not ready. The tannins are not too hard, to be sure, but you'll want to give this a year or two (maybe more) in the cellar for better results. The mid-palate will easily balance the power in the long run. This tastes great and shows great promise for the future. This is one you'll have to be prepared to cellar a bit. If you're not patient, look away. It will probably show more harmony in the mid-2020s, but it still may not be at peak then. I think this is pretty impressive today. Some cellaring may actually improve it notably.
