1947 Vintage Report

Bordeaux: The 1947 wine vintage was another superb, legendary year for Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Vintage Port: The 1947 port vintage was outstanding. An outstanding vintage that produced elegant and delicate ports and which was declared by only 11 shippers. Well cellared wines are drinking well and will last for many more years. Very popular in the wine starved 1950's which is why little remains.

Messias Port, 1947

Colheita Single Harvest Tawny Port

The Messias colheita port from the outstanding 1947 vintage has been aged in a barrel until bottling this year.

The extended barrel aging has given this wine a complex fusion of dried fruit and cedar notes. On the palate the wine is smooth and full bodies with plenty nuts and sweet fruit on the palate, fine balance. A tremendous finish which goes on forever. Chateau Caillou, 1947

Sauternes 2eme Cru Classe (Unlabelled bottle-Vintage legible on top of capsule)

The 1947 Chateau Caillou was magical. The colour dark amber and the nose filled with melon, molasses and you already sensed the crisp acidity your mouth would feast on. Not as sweet as expected for this age, but incredible weight, velvet structure, almost endless finish and again, this marvelous acidity. We had it with foie-gras and this wine was star of the evening.

Chateau Palmer, 1947

Margaux 3me Cru Classe

*** 95 Points Cellar Tracker ***

Reviews
"Lightly perfumed nose with faint gardenia and other floral notes. Light funk at first that led to sweet bright fruit and light pepper. On the palate, red raspberry, cherry and light sweet spice. A wine I had not previously tried, this bottle was a big surprise. Would have merited a higher score if it had provided more than a mid-length finish. Paired with veal loin in black truffle sauce. Good fill, great cork. Palate began to fade after one hour, and nose after 1.5" Cellar Tracker Review Posted 2015

Fonseca 70 Years of Port Gift

Fonseca 40, 20 and 10 Year Tawny Port in a Triple Wooden Gift Box

Fonseca 40 Year Old Tawny (75cl):
Tawny Ports of 40 years of age, the oldest designation allowed, are true rarities.

This sublime port of great age and rarity has been aged in casks for an average age of 40 years. The port shows the old olive-gold hue of its many years in cask. Decades of evaporation have concentrated the wine to an exceptional density. Impressions of clove, nutmeg and an intense nuttiness converge both on the bouquet and palate. The wine's lush, almost viscous texture culminates in a finish of incredible length.

Fonseca 20 Year tawny port (75cl):
94 Points - Wine Spectator
Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny is deep amber in color with russet highlights.

Tuke Holdsworth, 1947

Vintage Port Embossed capsule plain labels.

Medium tawny brown colour; nose of brown sugar, vanilla, nutty; sweet but very balanced with light flavors of caramel, hazelnuts, dried currants. Profile like a old colheita but acidity making it light and crisp rather than cloying. Long smooth finish with almost fino sherry after taste.

Tuke Holdsworth was the brand name of the old shipper Hunt Roope & Teage, the former owners of Quinta da Eira Velha. The company was sold to Ferreira in 1956 but the quinta was retained by the family and from that point it supplied wines to Martinez and Cockburn. It is now owned by Taylor Fladgate.
