1967 Vintage Report

Italian: 1967 Italian Wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.

Bordeaux: The 1967 wine vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.

Vintage Port: Very few port vintages were produced in 1967 but some houses declared. The best ports show good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

Deep amber colour with greenish hints. In the nose stands-out the exuberance of the dried fruits with outstanding hazelnut suggestions. In the mouth, its excellent structure prevails under a desirable essence of caramel and chocolate.

1967 Messias, 1967

Colheita - Single Harvest Tawny Port (SPECIAL OFFER WAS £139 now £119)

*** 95 Points Robert Parker ***

The Messias colheita port from the outstanding 1967 vintage has been aged in a barrel until bottling this year.

Reviews:
The 1967 Colheita Port, a blend from old vines coming in with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar, is the latest in the winery's releases of old tawnies. The winery says that the "harvest was perfect with hot days and fresh nights... The wine had a good balance with acidity as a result and then matured for 45 years in Vila Nova de Gaia." This is super. Lively and elegant, it has wonderful concentration of old-tawny flavors on the finish: heavy molasses mingled with caramel and laced with a hint of treacle.

1967 Barolo, 1967

Alessandria Luigi (Price includes dark mocha gift box as illustrated)

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

1967 Chateau Guiraud

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe ( Price includes dark mocha leather effect gift box with silk liner as illustrated)

Amber-bronze in colour. Stewed apricot / apricot skin and toffee on the nose. High intensity.

On the palate the toffee holds centre ground with apricot in close support, but there's both complexity (including some nice seville orange marmalade, notably coming through in strength on the finish) and creeping madeirisation - you can see where this wine is going. For all that toffee (and a reasonably luscious body), the wine might start sweet, but it heads clearly towards dryness on the finish. Very good.
