1967 Vintage Report

Italian: 1967 Italian Wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.

Bordeaux: The 1967 wine vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.

Vintage Port: Very few port vintages were produced in 1967 but some houses declared. The best ports show good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

Messias Port, 1967

Colheita Single Harvest Tawny Port including Leather Effect box.

*** 95 Points Robert Parker ***

The Messias colheita port from the outstanding 1967 vintage has been aged in a barrel until bottling this year.

Reviews:
The 1967 Colheita Port, a blend from old vines coming in with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar, is the latest in the winery's releases of old tawnies. The winery says that the "harvest was perfect with hot days and fresh nights... The wine had a good balance with acidity as a result and then matured for 45 years in Vila Nova de Gaia." This is super. Lively and elegant, it has wonderful concentration of old-tawny flavors on the finish: heavy molasses mingled with caramel and laced with a hint of treacle.

Barolo, 1967

Alessandria Luigi

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barolo, 1967

Michele Mascarello, La Morra - Riserva

**92 Points cellar Tracker ***

"Very light brownish ruby. Cloudy, almost milky in appearance. Initially notes of madeirization on the nose, but with air pretty cinammon and baking spice dominated aromas emerged. On the palate, a nice core of sweet cherry fruit surrounded by the cinammon and spice, with an incredibly silky texture. One of the few older barolos I've had where the palate far exceeded the nose. Gorgeous."

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'.

Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

Chateau Calon Segur, 1967

3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

87 Points Robert Parker
91 Points Cellar Tracker

Robert Parker writes of this wine
"Calon-Segur made one of the best 1967s, which for several years outperformed its more heralded older sibling, the 1966. Rich, soft, supple, and deeply fruity, the wine had a voluptuous texture. The bouquet offered ripe fruit and good cedary scents. The fruit has now begun to fade ". RP Bordeaux 3rd Ed 1998.

Cellar Tracker 91 Points:
"Great old bordeaux. Good colour, soft nose with typical old bordeaux earthy aromas. Palate was sweet, well balanced, lovely finish just a hint of bitterness but a great wine, a real pleasure even if past its prime" Cellar Tracker Review 2014.
