1977 Vintage Report

Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian Wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines. The wines are fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing season led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.

Spain:
1977 Vintage Report

A few top producers made very good wine – for example, Martínez Bujanda and Salceda – but most of it was run-of-the-mill and was drunk as joven. A meagre 1% achieved Gran Reserva status.

Vintage Port: 1977 was a classic Port vintage that was declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable. They will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power.

Barolo, 1977

Villadoria

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Baron de sigognac had found the core of the mystery of armagnac…
The legend adds that, with time, baron de sigognac came to trust only his palate in telling the age of an armagnac. the clocks were left unwound.

Chateau Haut Batailley, 1977

Pauillac 5eme Cru Classe (Half Bottle)

This is a little better than the average for this vintage in that the nose first showed heavy tones of saddler and tobacco above all else but it calmed with the time after opening. Lots of sous bois and wet mushrooms developed with hints of the tobacco and leather. Some hints of lead pencil and cigar, but the palate still has a refined and smooth feel, albeit lacking in grip and fruit depth.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1977

Pauillac, 1st Growth Classification

At the invitation of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother spent three days at Mouton on the occasion of her official visit to Bordeaux in April 1977.

To commemorate the visit, and with her permission, Baron Philippe dedicated the 1977 Mouton Rothschild label to her as a personal tribute.

Despite the vintage this wine still has a majestic color and nose given its age. As with most Bordeaux from 1977, this is a tad past its prime but you can tell this was a wine of elegance. Very interesting flavors of earth, a little leather, and berries. a little short lived on the palate but very interesting.

Cockburn Port, 1977

Vintage Port (New release)

1977 Vintage Port Bicentenary Limited Edition

Following the acquisition of Cockburn’s in 2006, the Symington family were surprised to find 116 cases of 1977 Vintage Port in a corner of the company’s cellars. Cockburn’s famously did not ‘declare’ a 1977 Vintage, although virtually every other Port house did so.

Cockburn’s had been under multinational ownership since 1962 and the head office strangely turned down the request of the company’s winemakers in Portugal to ‘declare’ the 1977 Vintage, apparently a vintage offer did not fit into the multinational’s global corporate plan, despite excellent weather conditions and the obvious quality of the wine.

Croft Port, 1977

Vintage Port

Tasting note: Red brick colour turning to amber on the rim. Seductive ripe and complex nose, with undertones of rich jammy and figgy fruit and fine caramel and exotic notes of cedar wood and spice. A superb fruit driven Vintage Port, true to the tradition of this ancient Pinhão Valley estate.

A clear claret/garnet core. The nose is ripe and attractive, but lacking the complexity of say, Taylors ’77 for example. Hints of cherry, brambly red-berried fruit, ginger and honey, though improving with time in glass as more blackberry leaf element begin to appear. The palate is sweet, ripe, very primordial considering the vintage, rounded in texture, supple with a lushness

Another excellent port from Croft that rivals other top producers.
