1977 Vintage Report

Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian Wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines. The wines are fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing season led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.

Spain:
1977 Vintage Report

A few top producers made very good wine – for example, Martínez Bujanda and Salceda – but most of it was run-of-the-mill and was drunk as joven. A meagre 1% achieved Gran Reserva status.

Vintage Port: 1977 was a classic Port vintage that was declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable. They will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power.

1977 Warre's

Vintage Port (Comes in a Dark Mocha Leather effect gift box as illustrated + FREE UK Mainland standard 3-5 day delivery).

The Queen served Warres's 1977 Port to the Chinese Premier at the state visit in 2015.

Reviews:

Rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better.

"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style.

Fonseca 40 Year Aged Tawny Port

Fonseca 40 Year Aged Tawny Port - (Comes in original Fonseca Box with 2 Tasting Glasses as illustrated)

Tawny Ports of this age, the oldest designation allowed, are true rarities.

This sublime port of great age and rarity has been aged in casks for an average age of 40 years. The port shows the old olive-gold hue of its many years in cask. Decades of evaporation have concentrated the wine to an exceptional density. Impressions of clove, nutmeg and an intense nuttiness converge both on the bouquet and palate. The wine's lush, almost viscous texture culminates in a finish of incredible length.

Peter Symington recommends, “Aged Tawny Ports are not designed to age in bottle and therefore should not be kept in a cellar for further ageing.

Vintage Port MAGNUM (Comes in individual case as illustrated).

Reviews
"...it's outstanding quality... Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, mint and violet. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness and lots of berry and cherry fruit. Very fruity and fresh. Long and lively. Delicious now, but will improve."
James Suckling , Wine Spectator 2007

"Quite deep crimson but with an evolved ruby to brick rim. Rich, round nose – seems at first almost fully evolved and yet with a real punch of acidity and, right at the end a kick of tannin. Lots of interest and life. A can can dancer. Complete and with lots still to give."

1977 Quarles Harris

Vintage Port (LIbrary release)

Founded in 1680 by Thomas Dawson, Quarles Harris is amongst the oldest Port shippers still in existence, and their shipment of 98 pipes of Port in 1689 is the oldest recorded shipment by a firm still trading today. In the late 18th century they had a solid reputation as a shipper of fine quality Port, and were the second largest shipper of the time. The firm continued to trade and remained in family hands until the 1920’s when the then owner, Reginald Quarles Harris, sold the firm to his cousin’s husband – Andrew James Symington. AJ, as he was known, revived the firm and established it once more as a maker of fine quality Ports.

Barros Port

This bottle of 40 year old port is an absolute delight. It has a flavour of raisins, prunes, cherries and other dried fruits which have been soaked in a fine alcohol in small barrels for years until their flavours have been thoroughly infused the port. Blandys Madeira, 1977

Terrantez Madeira

Blandy’s Vintage Terrantez 1977 is a single harvest Madeira. This wine was aged for nearly 40 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity it was bottled. Only 2,404 bottles of this wine were released. Vintage (or Frasquiera) Madeira must be aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years, in practise they are aged for much longer, before being bottled under Madeira Wine Institute supervision.

Chateau Haut Batailley, 1977

Pauillac 5eme Cru Classe (Half Bottle)

This is a little better than the average for this vintage in that the nose first showed heavy tones of saddler and tobacco above all else but it calmed with the time after opening. Lots of sous bois and wet mushrooms developed with hints of the tobacco and leather. Some hints of lead pencil and cigar, but the palate still has a refined and smooth feel, albeit lacking in grip and fruit depth.

Cockburn’s had been under multinational ownership since 1962 and the head office strangely turned down the request of the company’s winemakers in Portugal to ‘declare’ the 1977 Vintage, apparently a vintage offer did not fit into the multinational’s global corporate plan, despite excellent weather conditions and the obvious quality of the wine.

Dow's Port, 1977

Vintage Port MAGNUM

Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L) presented in a Dows presentation case.

Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened.
