1981 Vintage Report

Italian: A bottle of 1981 wine makes the perfect 30th anniversary gift or birthday present.

The good 1981 Italian vintage produced a large crop of consistent wines. The best examples from Tuscany and Piedmont are now at their peak of their maturity.

Bordeaux: A very good vintage. Although July was cool the fruit ripened well through a warm and dry August and September. The harvest began under good conditions in the very last days of September but was hampered by rain in the first two weeks of October leading to a dilution of the grape juice.Nevertheless, reliable chateau still managed to fashion some stylish, classic wines, with medium body and good structure.

Port: Our recommendation would be for a 30-year aged tawny port to celebrate a 30 year anniversary.

Barolo, 1981

Barolo Dogliani Fratelli

The fruit has started to go towards the drier side and the sweetness is taken up by forest floor notes. There is a nice balance between the remaining tannin, acidity and alcohol. Works very well with food.

Barolo, 1981

Fontanafredda

Slightly bricking color with good depth. The nose jumps to a start with notes of toasted cinamon which is quickly joined by smoky speck, plumskin, matchstick, and notes of candle wax and incense. Just a touch lean in the mouth yet with lovely balance. Moves through the mouth with strong acidity and offers up lots of amarena cherry that benefits from a touch of sweetness up front and the cut of minerality on the finish. Fully mature

Brunello di Montalcino, 1981

Barbi Special Offer Was £79.95 now £69.95)

Brunello de Montalcino is one of Italys most famous and most expensive red wines. It is produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located about 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. Brunello, roughly translated as "nice dark one" is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese used in production.

From the very good 1981 Italian Vintage. Barbi's Brunello di Montalcino is a blockbuster. Super-rich powerful, tannic, and heady, with a huge spicy bouquet of smokey tobacco meat and dried fruits. This wine is very long-lived and is still drinking well today.

Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1981

Premier Grand Cru Classe

*** 92 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "The Cheval Blanc 1981 is a beautiful wine, far more charming than the 1982 served at the same dinner. It has a very pure, nonchalant nose where the Cabernet Franc determines its peppery aroma, married with singed leather and hot roof tiles. There is something joyful and carefree about the palate with tensile tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely wild strawberry finish. It is an “airy” Cheval Blanc, so light on its feet. Delicious! Drink now-2018+ Tasted November 2010."

Chateau La Conseillante, 1981

Pomerol

89 Points (Parker)

"This is a commendable showing from a difficult vintage, although the ’81 cannot and indeed, should not disguise its herbaceous nose with bay leaf and a touch of stewed black tea. The palate has gritty dry tannins, with touches of leather, cedar-infused black fruit. Nice weight, quite elegant with a touch of orange-zest and even a little sweet mango on the finish."
