1992 Vintage Report

Bordeaux: 1992 Vintage Wine: Rain during the harvest produced wines of variable quality. The crop was enormous but most of the top vineyards adopted strict selection policies and discarded a large percentage of their crops. This led to wines that are characterised by being soft, fruity, and low in acidity level with light to moderate tannin levels and moderate to good concentration. The wines are now mature and should be drunk soon.

Vintage Port: 1992 Port: The vintage was declared by some port houses who produced some rich and concentrated wines. The port is still young in 2008 and will benefit from further cellaring.

Calem Port, 1992

Quinta da Foz Vintage Port

This port from the outstanding 1992 vintage is dark crimson with slight tawny rim.
Nose is still very young and fruity with lots of jammy conserves, liqourice, mocha and chocolate.
In the mouth it is an elegant structure (or a thin) with pronounced tannins, sweetness and fine aromas of leather, tobacco and rounded dark fruits. This is a tight and well designed port.

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1992

St Julien 2me Cru Classe

Reviews: "The black/purple-colored 1992 gives evidence that Gruaud-Larose may have returned to the forceful, robust, muscular style that made the estate famous. In general, the 1992 vintage did not produce big, rich wines, but this effort from Gruaud-Larose is a reassuringly large-scaled, dense, powerful, rich, thick wine. The 1992 is more cleanly made than the leathery, "brett"-tinged 1991, exhibits gobs of earthy, rich, peppery, black currant, and herbal fruit flavors, low acidity, and a thick, chewy, lush finish. The wine's tannin is noticeable, but well integrated, making this wine appealing today, yet capable of 8-10 years of evolution" Robert Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Edition.

Chateau Leoville Barton, 1992

St Julien 2eme Cru Classe

Leoville-Barton might stand out among the classified estates of Bordeaux for lacking its own chateau, but it's what goes into the wine, not where it's made that really matters. Vinification actually takes place at Château Langoa-Barton, which shares the same ownership, but the estate's vineyards sit on 47 hectares of land between the Gironde and the huge expanse of vineyards belonging to Chateau Talbot. Expect a rich, densely concentrated wine with compelling fruit complexity, enticing inner-mouth perfume and suave tannins.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1992

Churchill's Port, 1992

Quinta do Agua Alta Vintage Port

Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham. Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port. Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner.

Fonseca Port, 1992

Vintage Port

Scoring 97 Parker Points a magnificent Port

Reviews "Fonseca has scored in both the 1991 and 1992 vintages. The 1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhaps even surpass this house's most recent great efforts (1985, 1977, 1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent port that will age well for 30-40 years.

Quinta da Eira Velha, 1992

Vintage Port

Deep- to mid-red in colour. Gently attractive of the nose, full of tart lime but with a hint of VA. Soft entry, but with a harsh edge on the palate and plenty of tannins drying the cheeks. Blueberry dominated fruit, just beginning to hint at maturity. The big finish is followed by a modest aftertaste.

"The powerhouse 1992 Vintage Port exhibits a huge, highly extracted, chocolate and black-raspberry-scented nose, full body, unctuously-textured flavors, moderate tannin, and a chewy, long finish. It requires 7-8 years of cellaring as it is revealing more structure than other 1992s. It should keep for 25-30 years." Robert Parker Wine Advocate.
