Grahams Port Bonds

It has long been a tradition for special occasions to be marked by the laying down of vintage port from the year of the event. Problematically, due to the fact that a vintage year is normally only declared in the second year after the harvest, the recipient of the gift often has to remain empty handed until sometime after the celebration.

Graham's are the first port company to overcome this problem,

Quinta do Vesuvio Capela, 2011

Capela Vintage Port
SINGLE BOTTLE 75cl

The Capela da Quinta do Vesuvio is made in years when truly exceptional wines are produced – the only prior release was in 2007.

The principal grape varieties chosen were again the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and the Sousão, all of which performed magnificently at Vesuvio in 2011. For the first time ever, Charles Symington included a small parcel of Alicante Bouschet in a Vintage Port. Through ongoing evaluation over the last few years, the Alicante Bouschet has shown itself to be a very impressive variety, contributing structure and colour, due to its intensely coloured berries.

The Touriga Nacional and the Alicante Bouschet were picked and fermented together on one lagar, as were the Sousão and Touriga Franca in early October.

Dom Perignon, 1999

Champagne

*** 93 points ***

"Tar and ripe fruit emerge from the glass in a generous, expansive style. This is a relatively simple Dom Perignon, yet the wine possesses outstanding balance and plenty of harmony. According to Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy the warm vintage also resulted in relatively high yields, and the low-acid style is most reminiscent of the 1976. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024. Decanter 2021 Silver Award Winner

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in colour, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.
Nose: As is typical, lots of (to me) Madeira-like notes. Some leather, some dark aromatic wood like sandalwood, some apricot, and a bit of spirit.

Messias

40 Year Old Tawny Port
***93 Points Mark Squires - Wine Advocate***

Very pale amber/tawny/orange colour. Fine and delicate aromas of hazelnuts and candied citrus. Quince marmalade character, delicate in style, with finesse and poise. Seemingly quite dry in style towards the finish (not as obviously rich as some here), and supremely refined.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1977

Vintage Port

"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1977 is quite powerful, very deep and intense, particularly for Warre." Robert Parker, Buying Guide 2nd Ed.

Finest Reserve Tawny Port, DOC Douro

Tawny Port is made from premium blends of wines, sourced from the best vineyards that have been aged for years in oak casks. Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.

Spanna, 1974

Umberto Fiore

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

Reviews:
"This is an utterly delicious wine! A languid, almost sedate bouquet whose charms creep up on you, with macerated black cherries, clear honey, blackcurrant wine gums, glycerol and a touch of rose petal, strafed with breathtaking delineation, the palate is full-bodied, exuding a sense of controlled opulence. Cashmere tannins, quite glossy and plush with immense purity and class. Rounded towards the finish with sweet black cherries mixed with summer fruits, great tension and poise. I doubt I will ever encounter a finer example of this wine.
