1999 Vintage Report

Italian: The Barolos and Barbarescos are very good and are reminiscent of the 95s in style and structure. 1999 was the third top vintage in a row in Tuscany. Despite the wet weather in most of Italy, the region remained hot and dry for most of the growing season, although there was intermittent rain during the harvest. Those who picked before the September rains have produced deeply coloured wines that are brimming with rich, ripe fruits.

Bordeaux: 1999 wine : A very good vintage that produced low acidity, ripe wines which have matured quickly and are drinkable now. However, they should last a good 15-20 years. The weather during the growing and harvest season was excessively wet and hot and in earlier times could have been disastrous. However, those Chateau that adopted modern selection and processing techniques produced wines of good quality. Those that did not fared less well. This is reflected in the wide variation in quality across the region. Prices are fair and reflect good value.

Vintage Port: 1999 port: Not a general declaration of vintage. Some vineyards produced small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines.

1999 Nebbiolo D'alba

D'Alba, Patrizia (Includes a Dark Mocha Leather Effect Gift Box with Silk Liner)

The 1999 Nebbiolo D'alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine.

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Chateau d'Issan, 1999

Cantenac (Margaux) 3rd Growth Classification

This d'Issan, from the excellent 1999 vintage scores an impressive 89 Points (Parker)

Reviews: "This 1999 is a gorgeously elegant style of wine, with notes of violets, black currants, and sweet oak. This delicate yet authoritatively-flavored wine is, as I said last year, the quintessential example of the finesse and nuance expected of a classified-growth Margaux. It is pure, graceful, with delicacy rather than weight, and lovely balance." Parker, Wine Advocate 2002

The deep purple-colored 1999 Ducru Beaucaillou, which represents 60% of the crop, offers aromas of crushed stones, raspberry liqueur, and black currants. This sweet, pure, and harmonious wine possesses elegance, finesse, and multiple nuances rather than power, concentration, and structure. This is Bordeaux at its finest.

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, 1999

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 90 Points (outstanding) Wine Journal ***

Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. There is a little more lift and definition on the nose compared to the Lynch Bages. Black dusty fruits, a touch of cedar, antique bureau, mint and dried blood. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, good density, touch of bitterness in the mid-palate, very foursquare towards the finish that has a slightly ferrous edge. This is a stout, sturdy GPL that should drink well for a few years but will never thrill like say the 1982 or the 2006. Drink 2010-2020. Tasted June 2009. Neil Martin Wine Journal.

Chateau Leoville Lascases, 1999

St Julien, 2nd Growth Classification

*** 91 Points Robert Parker ***

Reviews
"The 1999 Leoville Las Cases possesses a dense purple color as well as classic aromas of vanilla, black cherries, and currants mixed with subtle toasty oak. The wine is medium-bodied with sweet tannin, yet it remains young, backward, and unevolved (unusual for a 1999). Its extraordinary purity and overall harmony give it a character all its own. This excellent Las Cases will be at its finest between 2006-2022." Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1999

** 90 Points Robert Parker **

"A charming, lush, round, generous Lynch Bages, the 1999 offers plenty of sweet black currant fruit, damp earth, licorice, cedarwood and spicy herb-like characteristics. Medium-bodied, savory and broad in the mouth with no hard edges, this fully mature effort is a somewhat underrated vintage for this estate."

Chateau Palmer, 1999

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

***Rating 95/100 (outstanding)***

Robert Parker writes of this wine... "The 1999 is the greatest Palmer made since 1961, 1966, 1970, 1983, and 1989. It is one of the superstars of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It boasts a staggering bouquet of violets and other spring flowers intermixed with licorice, black currants, and subtle wood. Only 50% of the production made it into the grand vin. This is a multidimensional, compelling effort with both power and elegance, it offers sweet tannin along with flavors that caress the palate, and a 45-second finish.

Chianti Colli Senesi, 1999

Caulio - Pietraserena

The typical characteristics this Chianti exhibits are a bright ruby colour which turns to garnet with time, a fruity nose with black cherry and violets, with a more pronounced character of finesse when the wine undergoes ageing. The palate is balanced, fruity, slightly tannic which is refined over time to a soft and velvet taste.

Chianti Colli Senesi is perhaps Chianti's most significant subzone, located on the hills surrounding Siena in the southern part of the Chianti region.
