Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. In declared Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Grahams Vintage Ports. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Grahams to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other Vintage Ports. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos Vintage Port is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more.

Panascal- Vintage Port

In undeclared vintages Fonseca bottle Panascal, provided the quality of the fruit is sufficient. This has a good depth of colour, with a moderate red-tawny hue. The nose has exotic notes of musky scent and spiced woods, together with some chocolate edged fruit. The palate has an impressive texture and sweetness immediately apparent on entry. Good fruit and a nice backbone of soft tannins. Elegant, with a touch of complexity, with balance, very much in the house style.

Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham.

Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port.

Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner. …
