This famous old estate is one of the most substantial properties in, what is considered by many, to be the finest wine producing area of the Upper Douro. After a mild June, July and August were hot and dry, leading to good even maturation, with the Tinta Barroca looking particularly promising. Maturation studies carried out between 19th August and the beginning of the vintage, determined the following picking order at Vesuvio: Old vineyards; Tinta Barroca; Tinta Amarela; Tinta Roriz; Touriga Nacional; Tinto Cão; and Touriga Franca. Picking began on the 21nd September and continued until 4th October; great care being taken to select and vinify the very best fruit separately, once perfect ripeness had been achieved. Grape quality was very good with average sugar readings an excellent 12o-13o Baumé. …

Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. Panascal- Vintage Port

In undeclared vintages Fonseca bottle Panascal, provided the quality of the fruit is sufficient. This has a good depth of colour, with a moderate red-tawny hue. The nose has exotic notes of musky scent and spiced woods, together with some chocolate edged fruit. The palate has an impressive texture and sweetness immediately apparent on entry.
