Claudia's Reserve White Douro Wine 2023
***89 Points - Wine Advocate***
The 2023 Claudia's Branco Reserve is a blend of Gouveio (52%), Viosinho (25%), Códega (18%) and Folgasão for the rest, all aged for eight months in one-third new French and Hungarian oak. It comes in at 12.9% alcohol. This handles its oak flawlessly, which means that the fruit shines through and the freshness takes control. There's a juicy and tasty finish with just a little acidic bite. I'm not sure this will evolve much if you age it, but it might hold on and become more interesting over the next couple of years. There's not a lot of concentration, but the rest is very fine. Drink this on its own or with lighter foods. …

Quinta Das Carvalhas, 2023
Branco das Carvalhas
White Wine From the Douro Valley
This stunning 2023 dry white wine from Quinta Das Carvalhas, is a blend of the indigenous varieties Viosinho, Gouveio, Rabigato, and Códega do Larinho, among others. When looking at producing a top Douro white, the focus was set upon the idea of blending the finest, traditional white Douro varieties and allowing them to integrate in perfect harmony with oak to reinforce its structure and generate more complexity. Carvalhas Branco was born through the winemakers' ambitious approach to the small parcels of white grapes located at one of Quinta das Carvalhas’ highest spots, where the varieties Viosinho and Gouveio benefit from a higher altitude (400m) and cool breezes which are perfect for a good quality ripening of white grapes. …

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, 2010
Gewürztraminer, Hengst Grand Cru, Alsace
The Hengst Grand Cru enjoys an old reputation for being the place to grow Gewurztraminer. The combination of a high lime content calcareous soil, some marl, a warm and dry setting, but not too precocious, provide the best conditions possible for this difficult grape variety. It was very saddening to see these old vines being hailed early July and in consequence, loose about half the crop. Perhaps the very small crop also allowed producing this wine? Who knows, but the result was a beautiful crop of dense, bright orange coloured grapes (modern clones are dark pink/red but less interesting). Interestingly, this wine fermented in two times, only finishing at the end of the 2011 harvest with a medium off dry sweetness. …
