About Palmer Port

Palmer's is the flagship brand of Fernando and Alvaro Van Zeller's Vinihold's company. Samuel Palmer, a late ancestor of the Van Zeller family - once owner of Casa de Malladas - was a maverick and a remarkable icon in the trade of high quality Port Wine to England. Paying attention to every single detail, the Van Zeller family have carefully aged thir wines in the highest quality oak casks to ensure that they mature these rare elixirs as Samual Palmer once wanted them to be.

Drawing inspiration from Aristotle's timeless wisdom "Excellence is not an act, but a habit" Palmer wines represent the culmination of a lifelong dedication to the art of winemaking. Every sip is a tribute to Palmer's unwavering pursuit of excellence, a legacy that continues to thrive in the 21st century. At the heart of Palmer's portfolio lies a collection of special category Ports, each one a masterpiece in its own right. From delicate tawnies to robust vintages, the latest vintage being the classic vintage 2014. Palmer offers an unparalleled range of expressions that cater to the most discerning palates. They even have a 150year old Tawny on sale! With a commitment to quality above all else, Palmer has earned its place in the Pantheon of Port.

The Van Zeller family is one of the most famous families in the Port area and owns several renowned Port houses, including Feuerheerds. During the 17th century, the Zellers migrated from Netherlands to Portugal to settle and founded Kopke. Since then there have been 14 generations in the Port and Douro wine trade.

Palmer Colheita Ports Colheita Port is a category of tawny Port where all grapes are from a single vintage. In Portuguese, the word Colheita means harvest and can be construed therefore, to mean vintage as well. Palmer Colheitas can offer excellent quality vs value. There's even less Colheita bottled than Vintage Port, typically only 1% of all Port produced in any given year. All Colheitas should be matured in wooden casks for at least seven years, although in practice they tend to be aged for much longer - sometimes up to 100 years. . Unlike Vintage Port they will not improve after bottling but will keep for many years. The label should carry both the vintage and the bottling date.

Palmer Colheita Port combines all the sweet, dried fruit and nutty finesse of an aged Tawny with individual vintage character. It should be noted that there Palmer also have a range of White Colheitas, These have a beautiful flavour profile and extraordinary aromatics and although it is a rare category, they're really worth seeking out.
